When you grasp the staff and spend some time attuning yourself to the item you learn the following information-

This slender, hollow staff is made of glass yet is as strong as oak, it is inlaid with various Celestial images- suns, stars, feathered wings and the like. It weighs 3 pounds. You must be attuned to the staff to gain its benefits and cast its spells.

Dawn Guard is a magical weapon; +1 To Hit and Damage.

While holding the staff, you have a +1 bonus to your Armor Class.

The staff has 10 charges, which are used to fuel the spells within it. With the staff in hand, you can use your action to cast one of the following spells from the staff if the spell is on your class’s spell list: mage armor (1 charge) or shield (2 charges). No components are required.

The staff has two further uses, it can shed light in a 30ft. radius as a bonus action, the light can be shaped to produce a narrow 30ft. beam. The staff also has a ‘conscience’, the wielder once attuned can question the staff as a bonus action, once/day, regarding the ‘goodness’ or morality of a future course of action; for example- is it right to kill all of the Redbrands? Dawn Guard’s advice does not have to be followed.

The staff regains 1d6 + 4 expended charges each day at dawn. If you expend the staff’s last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the staff shatters and is destroyed.

Bio:

Many magic items that need to be attuned possess a fragmented memory of their own existence, these ‘memories’ play out in dreams or visions witnessed by the newly attuned wielder, sometimes the dreams or visions are triggered by in-game events or experiences.

Interested adventurers can attempt to learn more about the item through research, or else by employing magical means.

Generally the first three ‘memories’ of the magic item will be presented below, other ‘memories’ will remain secret- only visible here to the wielder of the item.

Memory #1

Dawn Guard was created by Celestials, and equipped by the Guardians of Dawn, a group of magic wielding angels.

You actually witness in a series of flashbacks the staff being forged and crafted by numerous anonymous celestials- angels, each using their expertise to add to either the craft or the magic of the item.

Memory #2

You witness a group of angels, the Guardians of the Dawn, remarkably the group are slightly older looking (most angels look supernaturally young), the group of wizard angels are involved in a titanic struggle against a rampaging group of demons or else devils (you’re not sure which). The fight takes place before an alabaster white pillared temple like structure, which seems to be floating in a landscape made entirely from clouds.

Memory #3

One of the angels, wielding Dawn Guard is cut down by a demon (or devil), the staff falls from his hands and falls through the cloud layer, beneath the clouds an insignificant bluey-green speck. The speck gets bigger, it turns out to be the Oerth, the planet you inhabit.
