Session #009 Thursday 15th October 2015
Glory to the New Router.

Zalt, Male Half-Elf Warlock (Sailor) Level 3
Grimm, Male Human (Variant) Paladin of Tymora (Sailor) Level 3
Zyler, Male Human (Variant) Cleric of Tempus (Hermit) Level 3
Ken Lee, Male High Elf Wizard (Folk Hero) Level 2
Hellwhip, Male Human (Variant) Ranger (Pirate) Level 2

The new router is in place, it worked mostly fine- alright, it worked okay, it dropped off twice during the evening but on both occasions reconnected very quickly. We lost maybe ten minutes to down time. Whisper this but it might not be the router that’s crocked…

The Action-

1) A Quiet Night in the Inn.

5YAQY_smalla.jpgPhandalin. Still.

Back from the Cragmaw Goblin’s hideout, and having been paid five times over during their wanderings around Phandalin- or else it feels that way; the guys head to the Inn for a quiet night, a drink- a relax, and then time for bed. Alas the locals are still keen to express their thanks, all of the guys are happy to chat for a while- tell tall tales of their daring deeds.

They’re still the heroes of Phandalin- and rightfully so.

Eventually the adventurers retire for the night, and all of them to their own beds this time.

2) Rise & Shine then on the road.

The guys rise early, suitably refreshed- and now featuring Hellwhip level 3 Ranger in their midst.

After a hearty repast, their last one for a while, they hit the road as they have quite a few tasks lined up-

a) Head to Conyberry and then visit with Agatha the Banshee, find out about Bowgentle’s spellbook for Sister Garaele.

b) Head south into the hills, to Old Owl Well, check out Daran Edermath’s Zombie report, and if undead are present slaughter them.

c) South again, further into the hills, this time in search of Wyvern Tor and the gang of Orcs that have been bothering the miners in the region, so says Harbin the Town Master.

Busy, busy.

001_Smallc.jpgHit the Road.

Progress is remarkably swift on the first day of travel, the sun is out- there’s a slight breeze, enough to cool the folks, and there are no interruptions on the track. After the best part of ten hours walking the guys find a copse of trees close to the trail and rest their sore feet, cook up, sort out a watch and then get their heads down.

This is the life…

3) Alarm Call.

Grimm, nodding on the last watch of the night, spots a clutch of strange-looking birds roosting in a nearby tree, the creatures look oddly familiar, although it’s not till the avians take flight and descend upon him and his four sleeping colleagues that it registers.

STIRGES!” The raving Paladin screams as loud as he can, then kicks Zalt awake and bellows some more.

Fortunately the entire camp comes awake as Grimm continues to scream out his warning, Zalt- still bleary-eyed however is not quick enough to prevent the first Stirge landing on his upper back as he rises, skewering the Warlock with its odd proboscis it feeds upon his blood. The attack just makes him mad- Zalt’s Hellish Rebuke causes the creature to burst into flames, what a reaction.

One dead- five more of the vermin still in flight.

A pair of the creatures take to hovering over Grimm, trying to get through the Paladin’s defences, he keeps them at bay and then swats first left and then right with his newly purchased maul, latterly named “Stirge-Squasher”. True to its name the deadly weapon thumps and crushes the life out of both Stirges. Three destroyed.

Ken Lee manages to scramble to his feet and swat a Stirge away that is trying to stab him in the face. Zyler and Hellwhip meantime are up and into the attack- with warhammer and longbow respectively- alas the pair are off target.

Ken Lee has had enough- the High Elf’s first Magic Missile destroys the Stirge bothering him, the second missile destroys a Stirge fluttering towards Hellwhip, while his third missile wings the last Stirge remaining, which is doing its best to get the hell out of dodge.

It doesn’t get far- Zalt’s Eldritch Blast causes it to fall out of the sky.

Six Stirges killed, Zalt mad as hell and with a wound to show for it.

PCs 4 x Level 3 & 1 x Level 2
Monsters 6 Stirges 25 XP each
XP 150 Adjusted 300 CR 1

The adventurers are awake- no point going back to bed, they eat a well-earned breakfast and get a short rest in before they face the trials and tribulations of a new day, time to allow Zalt to regain his energy, and to see to his wound.

An hour or so later they’re back on the road again- Conyberry here they come.

4) On the Road.

En route Zalt dips into a book he recovered from Iarno/Glastaff’s laboratory- a section of the text, written by a Dwarf called Urmon, is dedicated to the author’s visit to Wave Echo Cave. The book has survived just short of half a millennia to make its way into the Warlock’s hands- Zalt reads on and shares with his fellow travellers the nuggets he finds within-

a) Wave Echo Cave is/was home to the Forge of Spells, a minor artifact which aided greatly in the manufacture of magic items.

b) Urmon was sent to Wave Echo Cave to collect a magic item commissioned by the church of Tempus.

At which point Zyler gets a little frisky.

“Read on… Read on…” The War Priest implores.

c) The commissioned magic item in question was/is a warhammer.

Zyler is aroused, possibly tumescent.

d) A warhammer called ‘Painbringer’.

Zyler is now desperate to find the place- tick ‘yes’ for motivated.

The adventurers increase their pace, on to…

5) Conyberry.

“Is that it?”

Ruined_Village_small.jpgYes. Conyberry.

Conyberry is gone- long gone. The walls of the ruins are at most three feet high- the outline of a trio of ancient buildings is all that is left of the settlement.

The guys are however on high alert, it therefore takes them a further thirty minutes of creeping around to be finally convinced that Conyberry is no more, and therefore harbours no threats. With the light fading the adventurers find a spot in a clearing within the closest copse of trees, eat and recap their watch rota- and then to sleep.

The night passes without incident.

Then breakfast and north, into the Neverwinter Wood.

6) Watchers.

It gets dark very quickly in the Neverwinter Woods, the trees are tightly packed, and ancient; curtains of vegetation and the dense canopy above serve to create a claustrophobic effect- the guys are shut in the forest.

They do however have a trail to follow, as Sister Garaele told them, deeper into the woods they go… that is until Zalt and Hellwhip get that hard to scratch itch- something moved, there’s something out there- in the dense tangle of the woods, watching them.

The duo tell their friends, although there are no new sightings.

Their pace slows- swords and bows at the ready the adventurers inch forward down the forest track, the unseen enemy gets better at staying out of sight, or else it was all just a trick of the shadows.

Cautiously on.

Eventually into a clearing.

7) Agatha.

Agatha_s_Lair_small.jpgAgatha’s Lair.

Grimm, this is his quest after all, is persuaded to call a greeting into the hollow of the great tree ahead, and when this generates no response, to enter the cavity within the tree and repeat the trick. The Paladin’s voice has developed a tremolo effect, this new addition to his repertoire- fear, is enhanced moment to moment by Zalt.

“Banshee- terrifying undead.” Zalt states to no one, and everyone- particularly Grimm.

“Kill you just by looking at you.” The Warlock helpfully adds.

“Don’t make her angry else we’re all dead.” The Warlock continues to chip away at the Paladin’s confidence, much to the DMs delight.

At which point Agatha shows up…

Things get tense.

Particularly as Agatha is in no mood for visitors- it takes all of Grimm’s charm, and a very expensive gift- a silver comb studded with semi-precious stones, to change the mood of the moment.

“Ooooh. That’s lovely!” Agatha coos.

Somewhat breaking the spell.

The Banshee’s new demeanor throws the adventurers off their stride- Agatha takes possession of the comb and on request reveals the location of Bowgentle’s legendary spellbook- in the cold dead hands of a Necromancer by the name of Tsernoth, last seen in the city of Irieabor. The guys make notes and ask a string of secondary questions which Agatha happily answers- only once or twice taking a moment to allude to the terrible power she wields. The adventurers are as polite as I have ever witnessed, their bravado terminally blunted- all smiles and compliments they keep the Banshee talking as they edge towards the door.

Although there are rumblings within the company- they have other questions they need answers to.

Eventually Ken Lee works up the courage-

“Do you know where Wave Echo Cave is?” The High Elf tentatively asks.
“Yes.” Agatha states with a very (very) wide grin.

A short while later and the deal is done- Agatha will tell the guys how to find Wave Echo Cave if they will supply her with a new spellbook- the Banshee has a penchant for such items.

“Give her your spellbook wizard!” Zyler shouts at Ken Lee, while gripping an imagined version of ‘Painbringer’ in his hands.
“You can get a new spellbook- there is only one ‘Painbringer’ and Tempus has ordained that I should wield it.” The Cleric helpfully adds.

Ken Lee is less keen to hand over his life’s work.

The guys depart soon after, and a little while later- as they’re nonchalantly chatting and strolling back through the Neverwinter Woods they remember that not one of them took a moment to divine the truth of Agatha’s claim- not one Intuition check, the guys were too far gone in the moment.

It’s at this point, with the heroes entirely engrossed in their sometimes heated conversation, that the ambush hits.

8) Ambush (yet again).

More Goblins… the watchers in the woods are back.

The adventurers are taken completely by surprise.

A Goblin appears to the south, steps out of the trees ahead and plugs Grimm with an arrow, a second rushes forward and flings a javelin- which also hits Grimm. A third, coming from the same direction flings and skewers Hellwhip with another javelin. While yet another pair of miscreants scurry from the foliage to the east, the first is off target with its javelin- the second similarly wayward with its bow shot.

Five of the buggers in action- the guys grin.

And then stop grinning as a savage looking Wolf bounds out of the forest to the south, closes the distance quickly, and then leaps at Zalt- the Warlock is only just quick enough to get out of the away.

Hellwhip grabs out his bow, nocks an arrow and spins on the spot- levels the weapon, sights, and fires; a Goblin sprouts an arrow from its face, it falls and wrestles with death for a very short while. Death wins.

Grimm meanwhile strides forward to the closest Goblin, growling like a wild creature, his greatsword cuts and the Goblin is rent in twain- head-to-toe (a Critical Hit). The Paladin spears his sword blade into the ground, grabs out and catches the two halves of the bisected Goblin and then flings them at a pair of Goblins fast approaching. The creatures react in an instant- terrified, although momentarily, they skitter back into the woods, feared of the monstrous Grimm.

A second Wolf suddenly dashes into the clearing, snarling- straight at Zalt and bites the Warlock’s leg- the ferocious canine pays the price, momentarily engulfed in the Warlock’s Hellish Rebuke, a second later however Zalt is dragged to the ground- two of the beasts snapping and biting as he kicks his legs in frenzy to keep the pair at bay.

At which point things get very worse.

A Hobgoblin appears from the tree line to the north west, notches an arrow in its great horn bow and draws back the bowstring, and SNAP! shatters the weapon (a ‘1’). The lumbering goblinoid looks unamused.

Zyler comes to Zalt’s rescue, he rushes over and clubs one of the Wolves snapping at the Warlock’s dancing feet, alas the War Priest’s second swing is way off target.

One of the frightened Goblins fires another arrow into Grimm, just to make sure he has the Paladin’s attention.

“This is going to get ugly.” Hellwhip mutters under his breath.

Ken Lee to the rescue, the Wizard weaves and waves his hands and the two Wolves savaging Zyler slump to the floor, snoring and gruffly growling in their slumber. The Wizard thumps his magical staff, Dawn Guardian, into the rock hard earth- the clearing is bathed in a pearly opalescent light.

“Good work!” Zyler calls out, and grins at the Mage as he clambers to his feet, at last.

“Bless the righteous!” Grimm cries out and Tymora is in the mix, and granting favour to the Paladin, Hellwhip and Zyler (they’re Blessed). The Paladin changes tack and heads north, from which direction two Hobgoblins come rushing in- one with a broken bow, Grimm keeps the pair at bay but fails to land a hit. Zyler however has better luck, he joins the Paladin and swings heartily with his warhammer- caving in the skull of one of the Hobgoblins, dead in an instant (yet another Critical Hit).

Hellwhip is struck again, another flung javelin, the Goblins are using hit and run tactics, the Ranger screams a warning to his companions as a third Hobgoblin emerges from the bush and scrub ahead, sights its bow and fires- the arrow whizzes by Zalt, getting the Warlock’s attention.

Alas a third Wolf also accompanies the Hobgoblin, it rushes to attack- and front and center is Zalt again.

The guys are surrounded and fighting for their lives.

Woods_Clearing_Smalla.jpgFrom all sides.

Zalt scurries aside but is bitten and bloodied, the Warlock staggers back and fires an Eldricth Blast into the third Wolf- the canine is picked up by the spells power and flung broken back towards the Hobgoblin- dead. Seconds later Ken Lee fires three Magic Missiles into the same Hobgoblin- the creature lurches but keeps its feet, it drops its bow- draws its longsword and strides forward.

One of the Goblins skirmishing breaks cover, darts into the clearing and with its scimitar slashes cruelly at Ken Lee, at the last second Dawn Guardian pulses and the foes attack is deflected.

The fight rumbles on- to the north Zyler and Grimm contend with a single Hobgoblin, to the south Zalt and Ken Lee also attempt to bring down a Hobgoblin; two wolves lie asleep in the middle of the clearing, while Hellwhip stands station there and looses arrow after arrow. The Goblins circle and scurry in and out of cover, launching javelins or else firing their shortbows into the mix.

Zyler, at last, brings down the Hobgoblin to the north, while to the south Ken Lee offers himself to the Hobgoblin he and Zalt are facing, he relies on Dawn Guardian’s Shield power to keep him safe from harm- the tactic works. That is until Zalt hits the creature with another Eldritch Blast- and now all of the Hobgoblins are dead.

Ken Lee fires another salvo of Magic Missiles, while Hellwhip keeps the arrows coming- in short order only one Goblin remains, the small miscreant isn’t stopping around however, it flees as fast as it can run.

Not quick enough to escape Zalt’s power, remarkably the Warlock talks the enemy down.

It goes a little like this-

“We have killed your friends, throw down your weapons and lie on the ground or else I will destroy you.” Zalt screams.

And then rolls a ‘20’ on his Intimidate check.

Bumflap (the Goblin) squawks and flings his weapons from him, a nanosecond later the creature is eyes tight shut, hands on head, clutching at and sprawled on the grassy ground.

“No kill I. No kill I.” Bumflap repeats like a mantra.

The fight is won.

The session over.

The wrap up next time.
