Session #007 Wednesday 16th September 2015
An Accidental Slaying.
Zalt, Male Half-Elf Warlock (Sailor) Level 2
Grimm, Male Human (Variant) Paladin of Tymora (Sailor) Level 2
Zyler, Male Human (Variant) Cleric of Tempus (Hermit) Level 2
Ken Lee, Male High Elf Wizard (Folk Hero) Level 1
Yep still no Hellwhip, Male Human (Variant) Ranger (Pirate) Level 2, – more work and less play makes Pedja’s experience points total look rather paltry.
1) Rest & Recovery.
The session begins with another short rest, particularly as Zalt and Grimm have both taken a beating, the Bugbear bodies are searched- a smattering of coin, a jeweled eye-patch, and a key are looted. Ken Lee uses his Ritual magic to check the items, to see if any of them are magical- alas no.
The Crevasse Cavern.
That done the guys head off again- back through the crevasse chamber and to the locked door they discovered earlier- the key they took from the Bugbear leader fits, while Zyler confirms (yet again) that there are no traps on the portal.
Time to Stock Up.
The adventurers take a moment to replenish their supplies- an armoury, although for the most part there’s only crossbow bolts they’re in need of. Zalt however makes the point- the Redbrands look to have been either getting ready for a fight, or else expanding their operations.
Re-stock complete the guys head back to the crevasse cavern and then down the south west passage (bottom-left).
The first door down there is open.
The Bugbear’s Bedchamber.
The chamber is thoroughly searched, alas there’s nothing of interest to find.
A minute or so later Zalt calls the guys over to the door to the north, the Warlock can hear raised voices coming from beyond the portal. Grimm identifies the sounds-
“They’re gambling.” The Paladin grins- he likes a bet.
“Redbrands.” Zalt confirms- the guys make ready their attack.
2) Death Card.
The guys kick the door open and barrel into the chamber ahead, getting the drop on the room’s inhabitants- a trio of Redbrands sat at a round table, in the centre of the table a mound of coins- clearly this is a high stakes game.
Cut (down) the Pack.
Ken Lee fires a crossbow bolt into the back of the closest gambler, Zalt follows up with his Hex and Eldritch Blast combo, the Redbrand is slammed head first into the table- spilling its contents. The other two Redbrands scramble to avoid the pile up- Zyler fires and pins another of the ruffians with a crossbow bolt, Grimm rushes over and decapitates the fellow- this is getting to be his signature move.
And another of the Paladin’s Great Weapon Master attacks- -5 to hit and +10 damage, works well with advantage.
The last Redbrand slumps to the floor and is sick on himself, the distraught (and drunk) human is reduced to tears and is very soon mewling like an infant. Grimm punches him the chops to shut him up, Zyler barks in his face for a while while Zalt and Ken Lee get busy tying and gagging the poor unfortunate.
PCs 3 x Level 2 & 1 x Level 1
Monsters 3 Redbrands 100 XP each
XP 300 Adjusted 600 CR 2
The guys make a recce of the chamber, scoop up the loot and then abandon the place, through the north door- they have business to conclude with Glasstaff and they figure the door ahead is the only place they’ve not investigated. They’ll be back for their Redbrand prisoner in a short while.
3) The Running Man.
After a brief listen at the door- Zyler and Ken Lee are certain they can hear the sound of water boiling, the guys push open the portal only to discover… an alchemist’s lab, and a rat on the floor- the rodent scurries under the table.
Put on you Lab Coats.
Ken Lee is straight over to the alchemical apparatus, the High Elf’s eyes light up- he’s always wanted a chemistry set of his own. The other guys mooch into the chamber, and quickly spot the rat beneath the table- the creature is however of ‘normal’ size and not a threat to them- Grimm and Zyler are content to try and coax the creature out.
Zyler however is in the zone, the Warlock scurries over to the door on the east wall- listens at it for a second and then slams it open…
He’s just in time to see a robed figure disappear through a secret door on the far side of the chamber, the door closes behind Glasstaff. The chamber looks to have been hastily abandoned- an upturned chest surrounded by a puddle of coins.
“He’s getting away!” Zyler shouts and then hot foots it over to the secret door, he finds the portal immediately and thumps it open.
“Back to the crevasse cavern- cut him off!” The Warlock screams again to his comrades in arms, and then rushes on- up the stairs ahead, to another formerly secret door into the storeroom- the open portal now obvious to see.
Behind him Zyler, Grimm and Ken Lee don’t hang about to ask questions, all three of the adventurers follow Zalt’s instructions- rushing out the chamber and back towards the crevasse cavern.
In Hot Pursuit.
“Take him alive!” Zalt screams and then spots the fleeing Glasstaff, the Warlock skids to a halt- Hexes his victim and then fires an Eldritch Blast into the retreating mage, who stumbles but runs on.
A moment later Glasstaff disappears, replaced by a plume of hazy mist- the Wizard reappears thirty feet further on, at the entrance to the passage to the secret door into the cellar- the way out of the lair.
Glasstaff runs for his life.
Behind the Mage Ken Lee suddenly puts on a burst of speed, thanks due to his Expeditious Retreat spell- or rather expeditious advance. The High Elf gets into crossbow range and takes the opportunity and fires, at the last moment a hazy blue Shield appears momentarily and deflects Ken Lee’s shot.
The pursuit continues, down the passage and to the secret door, at which point Zalt manages to get in range (and sight) of his quarry once again- the Warlock pulls the trigger, his faithful Hex & Eldritch Blast combo. Alas the necrotic wave that accompanies the force magic is too much for Glasstaff, much to the chagrin of his pursuers the enemy mastermind flops to the floor dead as a dodo.
A moment or two later the other guys catch up with the action, stop and stare at the sprawled corpse.
“I thought you said to keep him alive?” Grimm ponders and pointedly stares at a red-faced Zalt.
“I… that is… Bugger!” Zalt finally confesses.
“Hey. His spellbook is still good.” Ken Lee hefts Glasstaff’s magical tome and waves it in the air- he’s grinning from ear to ear.
Glasstaff is dead, the guys are victorious- and yet, they really did want to keep Iarno alive.
PCs 3 x Level 2 & 1 x Level 1
Monsters Glasstaff/Iarno (Evil Mage) 200 XP
XP 200 Adjusted 200 CR 1
OOC there’s an inquisition of sorts, mostly it seems I am to blame for not giving Glasstaff/Iarno enough hit points to survive more than two hits. What can I say- I added a few hit points onto the module version of Iarno- 25 HP instead of 22; it didn’t help the guy’s cause that Zalt’s last hit was for 16 damage all told. Them’s the breaks guys- on the upside I’m happy as larry that Iarno is dead- now I don’t have to tell the adventurers all of the info the Wizard was privy too.
4) Treasure aplenty.
Zyler slings Glasstaff’s body over his shoulder and tramps, with the others, back to the Wizard’s chamber- time for a thorough search of the Redbrand leader’s rooms.
Ken Lee is grinning like a chimp, every now and then hopping from foot-to-foot- a strange capering dance. The High Elf Wizard has Glasstaff’s spellbook clutched in one hand and Glasstaff’s glass staff in the other. What’s more the staff tingles to his touch- it’s magical. He has to restrain himself to stop from singing his joy for all the world to hear.
For more on Ken Lee’s new staff, click here- “Dawn Guardian”. Although in-game he needs to attune the item.
A little later on Ken Lee will discover that Iarno also had a pair of spell scrolls in his possession, one of them Fireball, at which point the High Elf makes a mess in his pants, such is his joy.
The Wizard’s chamber also gives up a heap of coin, and a clutch of gems- the guys are more than satisfied with their haul.
Perhaps of more import is the note on Glasstaff’s desk, alongside a clutch of receipts for the glassware and chemicals needed to outfit his lab. The note is from the Black Spider, that got your interest, it reads-
“My spies in Neverwinter tell me that strangers are due to arrive in Phandalin. They could be working for the Dwarves. Capture them if you can, kill them if you must, but don’t allow them to upset our plans. See that any Dwarven maps in their possession are delivered to me with haste. I’m counting on you, Iarno. Don’t disappoint me.”
The guys are excited, the game is a foot and they’re players now- their task has been made clear, find Wave Echo Cave before the Black Spider does. That’s the prize- they need to find their missing patron Gundren before the Black Spider gets to the Dwarf.
In conversation the adventurers are however of the opinion that Gundren has already been found- Targor the Hobgoblin took the Dwarf- and he works for King Grol, Lord of the Cragmaw Goblins, this much they know. King Grol, the guys are assuming, works for the Black Spider- the guys fear that the Black Spider may already have Gundren.
Is it too late already?
5) The Last Redbrand.
The last Redbrand sobers up quickly- alas the foul fellow has nothing much to add to the sum of the adventurer’s knowledge; in brief the guys learn the following newish facts-
a) Glasstaff has done a deal with someone or something called the Black Spider, the sot has no idea which it is.
b) The Bugbears (the guys killed earlier) were sent by the Black Spider. The last Redbrand figures that these guys would have almost certainly have known who the Black Spider is, and where they are (or were) located. The guys are not at all happy to hear this- it goes silent on Skype for a little while.
c) The Redbrands were not in cahoots with Harbin, the Town Master of Phandalin, Zalt just needed to ask.
d) Glasstaff was also visited by a bunch of Goblins, the Redbrand thinks these guys were responsible for ambushing merchants using the Triboar Trail. One of the Goblins, a sickly bugger by the name of Droop, was left behind when the others departed- a present to Glasstaff from the Goblin King. Droop would most likely have known where the Goblin King was laired.
The guys debate a while, they’re certain that they didn’t encounter a Goblin in the Redbrand lair- the little chap is missing, or else- and more likely, he’s done a runner.
The adventurers are gutted, it seems they have solved Phandalin’s problem but missed out on important information that would have helped their cause- to find Gundren.
The Redbrand’s are No More.
6) Celebrate- Come ON!
There are speeches from Ken Lee and Zalt in the Stonehill tavern, followed or rather interspersed with singing, gambling and lots and lots of drinking- the guys are the heroes of the hour, maybe even the year. Although prior to the celebrations the adventurers make sure the bodies of Drel (the woodcarver) and Iarno/Glasstaff are deposited in a storeroom in the Town Hall, the remaining Redbrand is also put in the cells.
Phandalin is free from the Redbrand’s grip.
And lots of folk take a moment or two during the wild evening to invite the adventurers over in the morning, to discuss other business, or else to thank them properly for their endeavours.
But that’s for another day.
Back to the drunken debauchery, although it’s an early night for Zalt and Zyler.
The guys awake the next day a little more experienced- Zalt, Zyler & Grimm are now level 3, while Ken Lee is level 2.
It is also worth noting that Grimm awakes in Elsa the barmaid’s bed.
