All present and correct.
1) The EU versus.
Then guys are face to face with King Grol, the bugbear leader of the Cragmaw goblins, and in the fat fellow’s chambers no less.
Bugbear- King Grol.
Grol is less than happy, it seems his security systems need a major overhaul.
“Who are you? What do you want? Guards!” Grol blusters and shouts.
The guys are keen to answer the bugbear’s questions, only did he just shout for his ‘guards’- the DM confirms this.
Time to die.
But hang on, King Grol reaches behind his massive frame and grabs out a bound and beaten dwarf- Gundren Rockseeker, the adventurer’s patron, the guy they are here to rescue and who knows the location of Wave Echo Cave.
That puts a new spin on things.
“Stay where you are- let’s talk, this doesn’t have to end in violence.” King Grol states, a dagger held at Gundren’s throat.
The guys are about to get chatty when Grol adds.
“Guards!” Clearly the Lord of Cragmaw is feeling a little bereft of friends.
Did he just call for his ‘guards’ again? The guys check with the kindly DM- who is happy to confirm this fact.
There follows a brief discussion, and when I say brief I mean seconds, it goes a little like this-
“We should kill him before the guards arrive.”
“Already on it.” Christer, who plays Zyler, states.
“For Tempus!” the priest of Tempus screams and then rushes in.
He doesn’t get far, stepping out of the shadows behind the open door into the chamber comes a drow- a drow the guys recognise.
The Black Spider!
This fact causes a little consternation in the adventurer’s ranks, particularly when the Black Spider tries to bury both its short swords in Zyler’s back- one hit and the priest is bloodied in an instant.
Just a moment to recall that Zyler spent his luck point in an effort to avoid the hit, I re-rolled it and rolled a ‘20’, alas Zyler got to chose which roll I should apply- the damage from the Critical Hit would have put him down- I know because I rolled it just to see what it would be- 37 damage.
In the same moment, as a reaction to the priest’s attack, King Grol slits Gundren’s throat- an automatic everything and Gundren is dying with one failed Death Save already.
“Oh sh…” is the consensus of the players.
Zyler changes his target and thumps his warhammer into the Black Spider, the drow rides the blow and looks unconcerned.
“Get out of the way!” Ken Lee screams at the priest.
Zyler dodges back, and is bitten en route as Snarl, Grol’s savage wolf, tears at the priest.
Just a note to say Zyler has gone from maximum to 9 hit points in a matter of seconds- nice work by me.
The way is clear- “FLAME ON!” screams Ken Lee as he reads from a scroll and then flings a pea-sized ball of flame into the chamber ahead.
Fireball- Ken Lee shapes the flame so that Gundren and Zyler are kept safe from the fire. King Grol however takes the full effect of the blast, the Black Spider and Snarl manage to get some cover- the wolf is however very badly burnt.
Note bad damage rolls = 8d6 = 21 fire damage.
Zalt steps into the doorway, settles his Hex on Snarl and then hits the wolf with his Eldritch Blast, the canine explodes.
Gundren, lying on the cold stone floor of the chamber, coughs his second to last- he fails his Death Save, that’s two failures.
Hellwhip is next in line, he settles his Hunter’s Mark on the Black Spider and then thumps an arrow into the drow, the humanoid is now clearly in pain.
King Groll screams and shouts for his guards, and then attempts to smash Zyler down, he misses by a country mile.
Grimm rushes into the chamber and almost guts the Black Spider, his greatsword is momentarily engulfed in radiant light- his Divine Smite, the drow is left barely able to stand (hit for 30+ damage- rolled max with greatsword and just short of max with Divine Smite).
At which point, at last, a lone hobgoblin guard appears through the curtain to the south and fires an arrow into Zalt. The other hobgoblin guard, if you know the scenario, is off looking for friends.
The Black Spider in the meantime dodges back out of the fight and then leaps up and squeezes through one of the arrow slits of the tower chamber, the drow will be gone in a matter of seconds, as it is he’s only just visible through the opening- and impossible to reach with melee weapons.
Zyler stands statue and prays hard to Tempus, his Prayer of Healing- Gundren, Zalt and the badly wounded priest are all bathed in a glorious light, their wounds healed.
Further note- Prayer of Healing heals 2d8+4 wounds on up to 6 individuals- Zyler rolled 19, out of a possible 20. Yeah, some days you just know.
Ken Lee steps into the chamber and fires three Magic Missiles into the back of the fleeing Black Spider, the drow sags and then falls back through the arrow slit and hard onto the cold stone floor- dead before he hits the deck.
The wizard does a little dance.
Black Spider down!
Zalt settles his sights on the Hobgoblin archer, a Hex followed by some Dissonant Whispers and the humanoid is badly hurt, a moment later it’s dead when Hellwhip fires an arrow into it (and rolls a Critical Hit).
King Grol continues screaming for support, and then once again contrives to flail and miss with his morningstar, Grimm- armed with Hewer his magical greatsword does not miss- the bugbear leader is almost done for.
At which point the other inhabitants of Cragmaw Castle actually start to turn up, first to arrive are half-a-dozen goblins lead by Yegg- they spill into the storeroom blocking the adventurer’s retreat. Yegg, a goblin chef- complete with chef’s hat, takes a back seat and orders his warriors to attack.
Moments later another hobgoblin guard rushes through the curtain and into action- the adventurers are now being attacked from three sides, although King Grol is not making much of an effort.
In point of fact none of the enemies are making much of an effort- I make seven attack rolls against a variety of opponents, not one hit, and we’re on Fantasy Grounds so I can’t blame the dice.
Zyler in the meantime thumps his warhammer once again into King Grol, the bugbear leader is all but dead (on 1 hit point), and yet he can hear the sound of his guards trying to get through to him- he screams some more for his warriors.
Ken Lee prevents the goblins in the storeroom from hearing King Grol’s cries for help by unleashing a Shatter spell in their midst, two of the goblins are destroyed outright, several others are left bleeding from their ears.
Hellwhip gets shot- small victories, while Zalt destroys the hobgoblin guard with a single hit of his Hex and Eldritch Blast combo.
More goblins turn up. scrabbling over piles of rubble to get into the storeroom, and now ripping aside the curtain to the south to charge into the guys.
Better Late than Never.
At this point the wily DM decides that all areas of Cragmaw Castle have been alerted- all goblins and hobgoblins are now moving as quickly as they can to help their chief. There are about a dozen goblins in the fight at this point, and King Grol (but only just).
One of the goblins that emerges over the rubble pile is dressed very oddly indeed, this is Lhupo the ululating goblin priest.
Yegg continues to order the goblins into the attack, I make a bunch more attack rolls and miss every time. I’m looking back through the chat text from Fantasy Grounds for the session and I’m amazed at how often I miss with my attacks, I’m not rolling badly just rolling averagely- and when I make a good roll it’s against Zyler or else Grimm; and they have the best ACs in the group.
Grimm knocks King Grol out using the flat of his blade, and then cries out to the goblins to tell them that they have taken Grol prisoner.
Yegg, in an instant replies- the goblin chef proclaims himself king of the Cragmaws, and then urges his warriors to attack some more, at which point a bunch of additional hobgoblins turn up- another four of them.
The guys are beginning to doubt.
Hellwhip gets hit again by a hobgoblin archer, and then again by a goblin’s thrown javelin- the ranger is not doing so well.
And then hit again- another goblin javelin thrower, Hellwhip is really not well (on 6 hit points).
Ken Lee’s second Shatter spell is a big hit with the goblinoids- and the storeroom is packed this time, three goblins and one hobgoblin are destroyed in an instant, another three goblins are left badly wounded- including Yegg, the goblin king chef is furious and terrified.
Zyler meantime continues to pray up a storm- another Prayer of Healing- Zalt and the priest are back to being uninjured while Hellwhip is looking much more refreshed.
Zalt ends another goblin using his Hex & Eldritch Blast combo.
Lhupo, the goblin ‘priest’ chants and dances- like he’s casting a spell (alas the goblin has no spells- only the uniform of a priest), the goblin fires an arrow into Hellwhip, the ranger sighs loudly and deeply. A moment later the human stops yet another javelin (a Critical Hit), and the ranger is once again barely standing (on 7 hit points).
Grimm comes running through to the storeroom, the paladin of Tymora is here to save the day, he cuts down a hobgoblin followed by a goblin- the Cragmaw defenders look desperate, and yet still they fight on.
A hobgoblin closes down Grimm and cuts the paladin with its longsword, a second aims carefully and then thumps an arrow into the warrior’s neck (a Critical Hit for 31 damage). Grimm screams a little, mostly in agony (he’s on 3 hit points).
Yegg screams and shouts and rallies his warriors, he’s not going to let his kingship go without a fight.
A javelin thumps into Grimm, the paladin falls.
The rest of the goblinoids rush into melee- things are starting to look a little dodgy for the guys- Grimm is down, and overrun, Hellwhip is very badly wounded; the other three guys are however in fine fettle.
That is until Ken Lee unfurls his Lightning Bolt scroll and lets loose- the goblinoids are conveniently lined up before him- the result is devastating- four goblins including Lhupo the fake ‘priest’ and two hobgoblins succumb to the electrical discharge and are left smouldering and burnt.
How to turn a fight around with one spell.
To make matters worse Zyler starts up with his third Prayer of Healing, and once again rolls just short of maximum- all five guys are now back in action.
The guys are pressing forward, the goblins are falling back- although the hobgoblins are still holding the line- there are however only two of them left standing. Yegg is screaming in frustration.
Zalt gets hit by a scimitar wielding goblin, Hellwhip thumps an arrow into one of the hobgoblins- badly wounding it. Grimm holds station and Lays on Hands- expending all of his healing- the bastard feels much better thank you.
The fight is almost won, at which point several more hobgoblins and a pair of wolves suddenly appear through the hidden entrance into the storeroom.
“Cease fighting. What’s going on here?” Orders the first hobgoblin, who turns out to be Targor Bloodseeker.
The fight is over, at least for now- let’s see what happens next.
PCs 5 x Level 4
Monsters Wolf (Snarl) 50 XP, 13 Goblins 50 XP each, 6 Hobgoblins 100 XP each, Bugbear (King Grol) 200 XP & Doppelganger (the Black Spider?) 700 XP
XP 2200 Adjusted 8800 CR 12
The guys are keen to hear more from Targor, the hobgoblin introduces himself, and are less keen to continue the fracas- they figure they can take the new arrivals but Ken Lee is low on big flashy spells and Zyler has only Cure Wounds spells remaining.
2) Talking with Targor.
But before the chatting can begin the guys first make the discovery that the Black Spider is in fact not a drow-
The Black Spider?
The dead creature is a doppelganger- Zalt and Ken Lee are certain of this.
There’s a moment soon after when the guys are in two minds- either their enemy is a drow called the Black Spider, or else their enemy is an organisation called the Black Spider- a bunch of doppelgangers maybe.
Hmm. It’s a toughie.
Now for the chat with Targor, in short the hobgoblin knows very little-
a) King Grol, his boss, was doing some dirty work for a drow (maybe) called the Black Spider; Targor wasn’t particularly happy about this but… what can you do.
At this point Targor asks to check up on the health of King Grol- the guys drag the unconscious bugbear over to the hobgoblin. Targor quickly and efficiently cuts King Grol’s throat- and then declares himself king of the Cragmaw. The players didn’t see that coming.
Targor assures the guys that his sudden rise to power will not effect their negotiations.
Yegg, the goblin chef, however looks a little pissed off.
Targor orders Yegg to get him “a sandwich, or die?”
Yegg is demoted to chef, his reign is over.
b) Targor, with help from Klarg and his goblins, kidnapped Gundren and Sildar- that was ta least three weeks ago, and then brought the dwarf back here.
c) Targor has been out in the wilds since then- patrolling etc.
The guys have many more questions, about- Sister Garaele, about wanted posters with their pictures on them, about…
Targor doesn’t have a clue what the adventurers are going on about.
After a huddle, and a brief chat with Gundren, the guys declare their business here complete- they’d like to go now, Targor is happy to show them the door.
The adventurers quick march back into the Neverwinter Forest, meet up with Reidoth the Brown, and then get the hell out of dodge- as far away as they can get from Cragmaw Castle in the time they have left today, just in case Targor decides to come looking for them. The guys are heading south this time, the plan is to exit the Neverwinter Woods and then hit the Triboar Trail and follow it back to Phandalin.
Reidoth the Brown.
3) Gundren’s Story.
Next up a long chat with Gundren, the dwarf tells his story, in short-
a) He, and Sildar, were kidnapped by Targor and a bunch of goblinoids- they were taken to a watery cave. The guys are following so far.
b) Sildar was taken by the goblins; Gundren was searched- they took his map to Wave Echo Cave, and then hog-tied and taken through the wilds and woods to Cragmaw Castle.
c) Gundren had several long chats with King Grol- his map was sold to a drow that came calling, this was at least two weeks ago. King Grol however was keen to get out of him what all the fuss is about Wave Echo Cave, the dwarf convinced the bugbear that the cave is a gold mine.
d) The drow returned to Cragmaw Castle yesterday- he wanted to buy Gundren, King Griol was less keen to sell- or else the price was too high. The drow and Grol argued for a good long while- and then the guys arrived to break up the party.
e) Gundren thinks, he’s been beaten a lot and spent plenty of time unconscious, that the second drow was a hobgoblin when it arrived- which he thought was odd at the time. At some point the creature seemed to morph into a drow. Gundren is glad of the explanation- the creature was a doppelganger.
The chat continues for a while, Gundren has a question or two of his own- the most important of which is where are his brothers- Tharden and Nundro. The guys alas are at a loss to provide the dwarf with an answer- they’ve not seen either of the pair.
Gundren worries, his brothers set out for Wave Echo Cave approximately four weeks ago- they’ve been gone an awfully long time, and someone else has got directions to the cave.
Gundren wants the guys to get back to Phandalin quickly, and then head on to Wave Echo Cave, the dwarf further explains that the cavern is only five or so miles outside of the town, and he of course knows how to get there.
The guys are on it, or at least they will be in the morning.
Gundren alas also knows nothing about wanted posters, or Sister Garaele etc.
4) The Return Journey.
Reidoth leads the guys through the Neverwinter Woods, and then onto the trail and all the way back to Phandalin, the journey takes the best part of four days.
Back in Phandalin the guys make a few house calls, in short order they-
a) Get Sildar up to date with the situation, and in the same instance prevent a number of the locals staging an impromptu party to celebrate their safe return, and for returning Gundren. The adventurers are in a rush, they do however have time to catch up with events in Phandalin- Sildar is still waiting for a contingent of guards to arrive from Neverwinter, other than that everything is as was.
b) They also return Mirna’s heirloom- the necklace they found in Thundertree to the poor woman.
Mirna- she’s looking a little better.
The distraught woman is overjoyed, the adventurers have given her the strength she needs to go on.
There’s not a dry eye in the house.
c) The guys do a little emergency shopping- topping up on provisions, ammunition and replacing other lost or broken items.
5) Wave Echo Cave.
And then on with Gundren guiding them, to Wave Echo Cave, but that’s for next session.
