All present and correct, again.
1) Wave Echo Cave.
The guys, at last, head into Wave Echo Cave- the climax of their adventures in Phandalin; in tow they have Gundren Rockseeker pointing the way, although the agreement is Gundren is only going to show the guys to the action, and then duck out- he’s much too fragile to take adventuring.
There’s also the small matter of Gundren’s missing brothers- Tharden and Nundro; the pair headed back to the cave nearly a month past, they need to be found.
The entrance cave is a campsite- ahead a sprawl of mining gear and provisions, alas at this point Gundren- who’s leading the guys in, spots a body over the far side of the cavern. He rushes to it- terrified it… it is- it’s his brother Tharden, and he’s quite definitely dead.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooo!” et al.
Tharden in better days.
At which point the first stirge detaches itself from the cavern ceiling, flutters down and alights upon the anguished fellow, the stirge stabs its proboscis in and then proceeds to drink the dwarf.
The guys get busy as Gundren screams and shouts.
The Entrance Cavern.
Hellwhip’s bow sings and an arrow ends the stirge perched on Gundren, the dwarf seems barely to notice- he does however notice when the second stirge flutters down and repeats its dead comrade’s attack. Gundren collapses- unconscious and dying.
Another three stirges take flight, moving quickly towards the adventurers spilling into the cavern.
Zalt’s Eldritch Blast destroys the first of the trio, the second alas for the warlock slams into him and drinks his blood. Grimm flings a javelin and skewers and kills another.
Hellwhip draws his magical shortsword- Talon, and cuts the stirge from Zalt. Ken Lee picks off the last stirge perched on the fallen Gundren with a crossbow shot.
Zyler is quickly to the fallen dwarf- a few moments later Gundren is back in the land of the living.
The fight is over.

2) Gundren, Tharden & the Cave.
Gundren and the guys start with a thorough inspection of the fallen Tharden, the adventurer’s patron is in tears throughout; Ken Lee does his best to calm and commiserate with the dwarf. The wizard has an ulterior motive, he’s spotted the fact that the fallen Tharden’s boots look to be magical, while he puts his arm around Gundren he steals Tharden’s boots (with 21 Sleight of Hand).
A little later Gundren will cry in anguish when he discovers that his brother died without his boots on.
Ken Lee will investigate the magical boots a little later, in a quiet moment.
Tharden it seems has been drained of blood (by the stirges) but was killed by a short bladed weapon- possibly a dagger or a short sword; the Rockseeker brother has been dead at least a week, possibly longer.
Gundren is eventually persuaded to tell the guys what he knows about Wave Echo Cave, which in summary is-
a) This cave has been known and used by generations of miners for centuries, the cavern however has changed dramatically in the last few months- the depression to the north was previously filled almost to the brim with dirty cave water. Sometime in the last few months, whether through subsidence or else some other geological activity, the water has drained away- revealing two low passages (marked A & B on the above map). These passages both lead into Wave Echo Cave.
b) Wave Echo Cave is so called because… well, the guys will find out- Gundren chuckles.
c) The passage to the north west (marked A) leads into a mine, or else a maze of passages. Gundren, and his brothers, ventured this way but only briefly- they got spooked and headed back to the entrance cavern.
d) The passage to the east (marked B) leads into a set of caverns strewn with skeletons- masses of them. Again the Rockseeker brothers headed out in this direction but again were put off by the remains of the dead. Gundren explains that his intention was to have the guys investigate the mine after they had delivered his provisions to Phandalin.
Gundren, it is agreed, will head back to Phandalin- collect a bunch of miners and journey back to the cavern to recover the body of his brother Tharden. The secret is out- Wave Echo Cave has been located, Gundren is certain of his claim.
The adventurers have two new Quests-
Quest #13 Explore Wave Echo Cave & Kill the Black Spider(s).
Quest #14 Find Nundro Rockseeker.
The guys spend a while searching in the mud at the bottom of the depression, there are tracks here- a majority heading to the east.
The guys head in, Zalt sneaking ahead a little way.
3) Wave Echo Cave.
Zalt’s sneaking forward, the guys are inching in behind, and…
“That’s…” Grimm starts.
“The sea- I mean waves.” Hellwhip finishes.
During the BOOM the ground, for a second or two, resonates and vibrates while the air in the passages the adventurers traverse gusts against them and then as swiftly turns and whistles at their backs.
“Blimey!” Ken Lee offers, the wizard believes the effect is magical- and is keen to find its source.
4) The Fallen.
Zalt leads the guys on into a much larger cavern, the floor of the place covered in the skeletal remains of the fallen.
“There’s been a battle here.” Zalt states, at which point- as Ken Lee’s magical light illuminates the chamber, a clutch of stirges detach themselves from the ceiling above and heed the call to feast.
Zalt is their first target, two of the creatures alight upon the warlock and proceed to drink his blood, leaving the young lad screaming. He however has the sense to uses his Shillelagh to smash one of the beasts dead.
Grimm stands statue as the stirges approach him, he smashes two of the creatures down with his maul- nicknamed “Stirgeswatter”, a third of the flying vermin gets through the paladin’s defences and lands to make a meal.
Hellwhip’s bow sings and another stirge falls, there are however another half-dozen of the creatures still in action.
My guys hate stirges, they seem to be able to destroy Orcs in equal numbers in a matter of seconds- but stirges, they hate stirges.
A moment later two more stirges descend upon the now panicked Grimm, they too drink his holy blood.
Ken Lee comes to save the day, his Sleep spell causes five of the six stirges left- including the three attached to Grimm, to collapse in slumber. A second later Zalt ends the last stirge still active with another blow from his Shillelagh. The five sleeping stirges are dispatched swiftly soon after.
The fight is over.

Grimm stands moaning and whinging about the state of affairs- his Lay on Hands all used up already and the guys are only in the second cavern. Zalt also requires healing- there’s a lot of cursing going on.
Further investigation of the area and the guys are certain that the skeletons are the remains of mostly dwarves and orcs- they’re reminded of the history of Wave Echo Cave, Phandalin and this area- a horde of orcs passed this way half a millennia ago and destroyed everything in their path. The past is plain for all to see here- this is where the battles were fought.
The walls of the cavern are intricately carved- dwarves undertaking all manner of activities, mostly mundane, clearly those that lived and worked here took pride in the place.
The guys head on, south this time, once again Zalt sneaks a little ahead.
5) The Assayer’s Office.
The passage south ends with two closed doors, the entire area shows the test of time- the passage ahead is collapsed entirely. The guys head into the chamber to the east, an assayer’s office Ken Lee thinks after seeing the counter and finding three sets of scales, the place however is in ruin- and strewn again with the skeletons of the dead.
Look Out Behind You!
Grimm alas grows bored, as the other guys wade through the remains of the chamber- Zalt smells money, an assayer’s office- there must be something valuable in here. The paladin of Tymora wanders back out of the chamber and to the door to the west, he mooches around and then wrenches it open, at which pont at least half-a-dozen skeletons rise from the cavern floor- both before Grimm and behind him.
The paladin desperately defends against the undead, he has already stopped one arrow screaming in from the darkness ahead, he’s wounded again- and lacking light, he calls for some help from his friends.
Ken Lee is first out of the assayer’s office, the wizard spots skeletons heading this way from the north- he hits the nearest with a Fire Bolt. Hellwhip follows Ken Lee out and hits the same skeleton with an arrow- and still it does not fall.
Zalt hits but fails to smash another skeleton with his Eldritch Blast and Hex combination. Zyler races out and blocks the skeleton’s path- smashes one down with his warhammer and then lays into another.
Grimm stops another two arrows fired in from the darkness ahead of the paladin- he’s bloodied and badly wounded (again), a moment later yet another skeleton lurches out of the the gloom and cuts Grimm with its short sword, he’s almost down. The paladin fights back and smashes his skeleton attacker down.
Ken Lee fires out three Magic Missiles and ends another skeleton, Hellwhip achieves the same success- the ranger with his bow.
Zalt and Zyler drag Grimm back into the passage and slam the door to the chamber ahead shut.
“Hold it!” Ken Lee screams.
Beyond the door the guys can hear the scrabbling undead attempting to wrench the door open.
We go for a Strength Check test- the five skeletons win by a large amount and the door is pulled open and Grimm sent staggering back.
Zalt hits the first enemy with his Eldritch Blast, while Ken Lee launches a Shatter spell into the midst on the undead, the effect is devastating- two skeletons are destroyed in an instant, the other three are left very badly wounded.
Grimm steps back in and smashes two of the skeletons down, Hellwhip accounts for the last.
The bloody (for Grimm) battle is won.

And again Grimm needs a big helping of healing- the guys take a well earned rest, during which they search the chamber that contained the skeletons- a guardroom containing nothing except the ruined remains of the former inhabitants, and no treasure- much to Zalt’s chagrin.
6) Grimm’s Return.
The guys head on again, back to the north and then east this time, as before with Zalt leading the way.
The warlock discovers a naturally illuminated cavern swathed in carpets of fungi, the chamber is filled with the stuff- which causes the adventurers to pause and discuss their options.
The conversation at the front of the group goes on, Grimm very quickly grows bored with the chatter- the paladin grabs a torch and stalks back to the chamber containing the myriad skeletons behind them. Stirgeswatter in hand the paladin sets about shattering as many of their skulls as he can, to prevent any of them arising as undead any time in the future.
At which point, of course, a clutch of skeletons stagger to their feet.
“Oh Shit!” whispers Grimm and then repeats the phrase as loud as he can- the guys, again, come running.
The paladin smashes the first skeleton down, two others crowd Grimm and attack- he keeps them both at bay, a fourth skeleton fires arrows from the shadows.
Hellwhip rushes back, bow in hand- skids to a halt and aims, and fires, and ends one of the undead. Zalt takes down another with his Hex and Eldritch Blast; the last falls to Zyler’s warhammer.

The adventurers, breathing hard after a short sharp run back to rescue Grimm, stand statue for a moment and glare at the paladin.
Grimm looks sheepish.
At which point the 18th session comes to a close.
