Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition
The Red Larch Adventure.

We play using Fantasy Grounds and Skype, usually once a week for approx. 3 hours.

Yet another great session..


The Action-

1) Prayers & Sermons.

The guys are back in Red Larch, it’s midnight on the 20th of Nightal- the Winter Solstice, and a ceremony is taking place in the Allfaith’s Shrine. The place is bursting with locals- Imdarr, Priest of Tempus, is at the altar and leading the worship, members of the richest families of Red Larch in the most forward pews alongside the slightly rough and ready adventurers.

The guys are eventually called to the front, the minor celebrities of Red Larch, Grimm starts with a prayer-

“Blessed be Tymora.
We pray this day to you to thank you for watching over us.
May your light shine bright on those in need,
May you grant fortune for those bold enough to search for it,
May you always smile on us, and never laugh out loud.
May you turn our enemies hearts so we can learn to love them,
And if you can`t turn their hearts, turn their ankles,
So that we will know them by the sound of them limping.
Remember us and keep us close to you,
So that we can prosper under your guidance.
Blessed be Tymora, for we all are your children.”

From there we move onto Zyler’s sermon-

“People of Red Larch, hail and well met!
It is a great honor for me to stand here in front of you today.
My journey and adventure has brought me to your small and humble town,
And I can only say that it has been a pleasure to be here, and to meet you.
The Ironhead Arms, Bethendur’s Storage, The Swinging Sword Inn, Constable Harburk,
And last, but not least, Imdarr at the Allfaith’s Shrine. Thank you.
Also all of the other fine people and establishments that have helped us with so many things.
Let us hope for more fine memories to share in the future.

We gather here today because the year passes and the day gets shorter.
Remember though that one day, this day, things turn around again.
It is this day, that we call the Winter Solstice, when the day gets longer than the night.
The Light conquers the Darkness.

Let us celebrate this day together, children of the sun.
Let our fires burn with a frenzy on this darkest of days.
Let there be light!

Respect, valour and honour my friends.
In these dark times- Tempus will aid you.
God of War, the Lord of Battles.
Through good deeds, and honorable battles,
We shall drive the darkness away and bring forth the light.

Let the Foehammer guide us,
Aid us,
Let him bless us all!


Followed, of course- as many of these ceremonies are, by Imdarr’s version of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”-

“Zyler, the Drow killed your mum,
Put a crossbow against her head,
Pulled the trigger, now she’s dead.
Zyler, life had just begun,
Until the Drow went and threw it all away.
Zyler, ooh,
Ooooh-O, Oh-Oh!
They meant to make you cry,
But they’ll regret they even tried,
Carry on, carry on, only Tempus really matters.

Too late, her time had come,
They shot her in the spine,
Her body dancing like a fish on a line.
Goodbye, to the Drow, they’ve got to go,
Gotta destroy the entire race-
Painbringer in the face!

Zyler, ooh (anyway the Drow goes),
Tempus- he don’t want you to die,
The Drow are gonna wish they’d never been born at all.

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Goren Naeris, Goren Naeris, he can do the Tango?
Thunderbolt and lightning,
Ken Lee is very, very frightening.
Grimm & Zalt.
Grimm & Zalt.
Ooooh-O, Oh-Oh!"

There’s not a dry eye in the house.

It’s a glorious occasion, at least until the earth tremor- if that’s what it is, when an entire section of the church (around the altar) is swallowed up by a thirty foot deep sinkhole.

Which kinda puts paid to the ceremony.

2) Chaos in the Church.

Allfaith’s church is in chaos- Imdarr, with Goren, Ken Lee and Zyler have just disappeared down a massive hole- Zalt and Grimm jump clear just in time- people are screaming and trying to escape the building into the street.

The three fallen adventurer’s, and Imdarr, are all injured- and coming to the realisation that they are in a large vaulted cavern chamber, with a door leading from it.

Back in the church things are getting heated, most of the congregation have run away- although some of the townsfolk remain to witness the action. At present Grimm and Zalt are fending off Ilmeth Waevlur and Albaeri Mellikho- two of the richest men in Red Larch, the pair begin by trying to usher the adventurers away from the incident, concerned for their safety. Grimm instantly sees through this- the pair are clearly upset- but about what exactly.

Zalt avoids the confrontation- he casts Spider Climb (from his Spider Staff) on himself and goes over the edge, a second later he casts the spell again on Grimm, and tags the Paladin on his ankle. Grimm (forcibly) grabs up Ilmeth and Albaeri and then follows Zalt down into the collapse.

This doesn’t go exactly to plan- Grimm drops Ilmeth part the way down, the poor fellow breaks his arm on impact with the cavern floor below.

Soon after the guys are up and in action- Imdarr, the Priest of Tempus, has alas broken his leg, while Ilmeth and Albaeri have been restrained- the guys have taken them ‘prisoner’. Meanwhile Harburk- the Red Larch town Constable has turned up with a rope. Harburk, urges caution, Ilmeth and Albaeri- he states are very rich and important men.

The guys put the hard word on the two rich townsfolk, Grimm has to restrain Goren who is eager to start chopping fingers off the prisoners in order to extract information. The pair however quickly become angry, ranting and raging against the adventurers- calling them “Unbelievers!” and “Outsiders!”, warning them against “meddling”.

The guys are rightly suspicious, and yet gain little information about either the place they are in, or else what the hell is actually going on here.

Zalt hisses- “It’s a cult, a religious cult.”

Albaeri and Ilmeth are hog-tied and left with Imdarr, who even with a broken leg and sprawled on the floor, is happy to keep kicking the pair of rich guys until the party return.

Now to explore…

3) Dungeoneering.

The guys, very cautiously, head through the door and into a decrepit dungeon corridor- there’s a light ahead, they inch forwards to a crossroads, there follows plenty of creeping about- although not to the east, that way- Goren is convinced, is bad.

The passage to the south leads to an ancient Dwarven toilet, the guys are about to head north when a volley of crossbow bolts are fired at them from the eastern passage- Goren did say that way was bad.


The adventurers can’t make out who is firing at them, they scuttle north- although keeping an eye out behind them, just in case.

The adventurers take a moment to get their bearings, consensus is- after a bunch of skill checks, they guys are in an ancient Dwarven structure- centuries, if not millennia old, but what is the place being used for now?

Once again Goren is sent forward on a scouting mission, this doesn’t go exactly to plan- a chamber with several dead bodies (humans) is found, the room also contains a pair of Giant Rats gnawing on the corpses. The guys get violent, a short while later the Rats return the compliment.

4) Attacked from all Sides.

Goren shoots one of the Giant Rats, the other scurries to safety- the walls are studded with rat holes- the guys move up and a moment later a Swarm of Rats boils out of the stonework, clearly they are not ready to give up their feast.

Zyler finds himself standing in the middle of the Swarm, a short while later and the Cleric is facing two Swarms, alas (for me) Zyler’s armour is impervious to the vermin, particularly when Grimm casts a Shield of Faith spell on him (AC 22 or 23?). The guys set to work on beating down the rodents, a number of other Giant Rats also make it onto the scene to hassle all and sundry.

The guys are just about done with the vermin when Tempest, Zalt’s Owl familiar screeches a warning- it’s the last thing the creature does as Tempest is killed by a heavy crossbow wielding Thug, a moment later Grimm comes screaming to the rescue- with Zalt in tow. The Warlock is very unhappy, even when the Thug falls Zalt spends a short while firing Eldritch Blasts in the poor guy’s face.


Meanwhile another three hooded figures wearing plain stone face masks- most odd, make an appearance from the east, the guys take more hits. Note when this last trio of enemies turned up the guys were still fighting the aforementioned Thug, a pair of Giant Rats and the remaining Swarm- the adventurers are attacked from in front and behind.

The situation gets a little tense, particularly when all of the enemies start rolling high and hitting the guys, Ken Lee however sucks up the hurt and hits the three stone-faced guys with a Lightning Bolt- he fries them all, soon after the rest of the enemies fall.

The fight is won.

The guys check out the stone mask wearing figures- humans, they’re fairly certain that they remember one of their attackers- a worker from Elak Dornen’s quarry, suspicious, are all the rich guys in town in it together?

Whatever ‘it’ is?

Zalt is still furious after the loss of Tempest.

However that’s the end of the session.

Session #034 Ends.

New Info- The Winter Solstice ceremony is a great success, up until the point that the floor collapses and the guys get dumped in a cavern chamber… with a door. Up top several (rich) townsfolk get irate with the guys, the guys drag the pair into the hole with them. A strange set of caverns- the guys investigate, get shot at, gnawed by Rats and then shot at some more. They are, after all, “Unbelievers!”
