The Action-

1) Tricklerock Complete.

The Stirges are dead, the Quartz has been gathered- the guys mooch through the remainder of Tricklerock cavern, there’s nothing much else to see- except for some very nice scenery. The guys exit into daylight- into the Sumber Hills, they have a thirty minute tramp through the rocky terrain (leading their horses) back to the Larch Path and then on to Red Larch.

They adventurers however are happy to note that there are no signs of their watchers- they previously spotted a trio of bird-like creatures (humanoids?) flying high and seemingly spying on them, they’ve seen these guys three times so far in their adventures in the Valley.

Alas the journey back to the Larch Path is not without hazard- Orcs!

2) Frostshield Orcs.

Iceshield_Orc.jpgFrostshield Orcs

Coming screaming from the scenery are a pack of Orcs, later identified as Frostshield Orcs, also in the mix are a pair of terrifying Orogs.

The guys, for the most part, spot the attack before it happens- the Orcs are not stealthy, they are however ferocious- Goren and Zyler lose their mounts to the Orc’s axes, a moment later Atlas- Grimm’s magical Warhorse is also killed (hit by two Critical Hits). The Orcs and Orogs involved in bringing down Atlas are dismayed when the Paladin’s mount simply vanishes when it is defeated.

The guys fight back- several of the Orcs are killed, Goren specialises in steeling the kills of… well, everybody- but mostly Zyler, the Priest of Tempus is dismayed each time he beats an Orc down to critically wounded the Rogue is on hand to sink an arrow into the ferocious humanoid and end its life. Every time…

Three enterprising Orcs ignore the fracas, grab Goren’s dead horse and drag the beast away- while their comrades keep the guys busy, the remaining two riding horses- terrified, tear themselves free of their rider’s grasps and flee the fight.

Moments later and Grimm, cut off from his colleagues, is screaming for help- hit by two Critical Hits in quick successions (from full- approx. 49 HP, to 4 HP in two hits), the Paladin is facing off against an Orc and two Orogs. Grimm fights back, and with a little help from Goren (kill stealing again) he takes one of the Orog’s down.

The rest of the Orcs and Orogs successfully flee the scene- a fighting retreat followed by a dash for freedom- now that they have a dead horse to feast on.

The guys are… well, angry- or at least Grimm is, nearly reduced to 0 Hit Points (he also rolled a ‘1’ when it mattered), and now sans Atlas his warhorse. Zalt is also furious- 50gp’s of horse flesh is all the guys are left with, Zalt hates it when money is wasted.

Ken Lee, with a little help, manages however to track down the two terrified Riding Horses, the pair had not strayed far- the terrain making it difficult for them to do so.

The guys heal, and fume- Grimm gives orders, they’re going after the Orcs and Orogs, time to track the ferocious humanoids to their lair.

Note I’m holding the encounter XP over to the next fight- when the guys finish off the thing.

3) Orc Massacre.

A Group Survival (Tracking) check later, and another thirty minutes later and the guys have successfully tracked the Orcs back to a shallow cave- the trail made easier to follow by the blood left by the dead horse.

What follows is X-rated, the guys Stealth close to their prey and then launch their attacks- three more Orcs and an Orog are killed in an instant- two of them by Grimm who charges into the cave and goes crazy- revenge is sweet.

PCs 5 x Level 5
Monsters 7 Orcs 100 XP each & 2 Orogs 450 XP each.
XP 1600 Adjusted 4000 CR 8

The guys head back to Red Larch- in a bit of a grump, two of the five having to walk, Grimm takes ten minutes to summon Atlas back into the real- he’s not walking.

4) Saying Goodbye to Red Larch.

After a bit of light chatter in the Swinging Sword Inn the guys come to the conclusion that they are going to leave Red Larch and head off to Bargewright or Womford. There are mysteries that need to be solved, namely-

  • the Vraath,
  • the strange stone masked Cultists,
  • the Necromancer and ‘the great eye’,
  • the unseasonably hot weather, and
  • the bloody big birds that keep on spying on them.

Rather than stay in Red Larch waiting for Strom Halifax to turn up they’re going to do a little investigating of their own, rumour has it Womford is an ancient settlement, and a bit bigger than Red Larch- more info may be available there- the guys have got a few leads.

And so the rest of the evening (mostly) is spent on saying goodbye to people, garnering any last bits of information and tying up loose ends. The guys get through the following-

a) Report to Constable Harburk about the Frostshield Orcs in the Sumber Hills, the Orcs looked to be starving- perhaps something to do with the lack of snow- it’s 12C, early evening on the 23rd of Nightal. Harburk begs the guys to take care on their travels, and if they bump into the Knights of Samular, to send them this way- to Red Larch.

b) The guys visit Bethendur’s Storage, thin out their equipment a little- dump stuff in the cart.

c) The guys are visited by Phaendra, the proprietor of Chansyrl’s Fine Harness, Phaendra looks lovely in leather- Grimm is certainly an admirer. The young woman asks the guys for a favour- she has learned that they are leaving for Womford, she wants to visit Bargewright- to see the Ironwrought competition that is held there each year. Her reasoning is simple- Bargewright is two days away by horse, and through bad lands, the Ironwrought competition only takes place at this time of the year- and at this time of the year there’s usually at least two feet of snow on the ground. This could be her only chance to see the spectacle.

After a long chat with his colleagues Grimm agrees to her request, Ken Lee is also taking Ghilee with him (probably- Bob/Ken Lee wasn’t here for the session).

d) Imdarr, Gauntlet member and Priest of Tempus is consulted- he is also one of the guys that the adventurers have a long chat with about their present situation, i.e. that they are waiting for a Dwarf called Strom Halifax to turn up. The guys are keen that every effort should be made to get in contact with them if and when Strom turns up.

The evening ends with thanks, and drinks, and lots of fond farewells.

5) En Route- Rescue the Shepherd.

Dess__1.jpgThe Cairn Road.

Early the next morning, the 24th of Nightal, the guys head off on the Cairn Road to Bargewright and Womford, it’s another beautiful day- particularly as we’re heading towards midwinter, the temperature is around 10C by 8:30 AM.

Three hours later and the guys are getting tetchy again- they’ve spotted, once more, that they’re being followed- or rather watched, from up above- remarkably Zyler can make out a few details.

“They’re not birds- they’re men- or humanoids, only with wings… Like?” Zyler muses.
“Harpies?” Zalt tempts.
“Maybe, I think they could be Gargoyles.” Zyler states, and then shakes his fist at the circling creatures.

At which the guys suddenly become aware of screaming and shouting coming from a little further up the road- a miserable looking fellow, attired as a shepherd- or else a wanderer of the wilds, is running and yelling in terror- chased by a pack of Wolves, including a pair of Dire Wolves.

It gets to fighting- Grimm has to rush in to position himself in front of the shepherd, to keep him safe- the Paladin of Tymora is suddenly engulfed- attacked by three Wolves and both Dire Wolves, he tends to attract trouble.

Wolf_2.pngDire Wolf.

The fight is furious- and again Grimm takes a beating, initially it’s all going well for the Wolf attackers, and then Ken Lee drops the Fireball- thereafter we quickly switch into massacre mode. None of the creatures survive, the shepherd is bitten once but survives.

PCs 5 x Level 5
Monsters 7 Wolves 50 XP each & 2 Dire Wolves 200 XP each.
XP 800 Adjusted 2750 CR 5

That however is the end of the session.
