The Red Larch Adventure.

We play using Fantasy Grounds and Skype, usually once a week for approx. 3 hours.

Session #040 Thursday 7th July 2016
Gone in 48 Seconds.

The title for this session is very apt, the three hours of play- minus a couple of breaks for beer and bio, and a short stoppage or two to look up a rule or spell, the entire session in-game amounted to eight rounds of combat… that’s all we got through.

It was… superb.

The Action-

1) Brief Recap & Intro to the Kobold War.

The guys are situated within an ancient Dwarven redoubt- now home to a tribe of Kobolds, the small humanoids only recently moved here. Avarthel, a local Druid, has employed the guys to investigate the little buggers- something is just not right.

Avarthel has been spying on the tribe, the Kobolds command a squad of Ogres (killed by the guys), have been visited by a Gargoyle, and a Bugbear Lord (with spellcasting abilities) guarded by a squad of pale Hobgoblins- very war-like variants.

Something, as Avarthel has already stated, is clearly amiss here.

Last session the guys took out a bunch of surface dwelling Ogres, fought their way down a Stirge and Carrion Crawler infested sinkhole and into the dungeon itself. There they went toe-to-toe with a gang of Kobolds and Giant Rats, followed very swiftly by a smaller gang of Kobolds, and then immediately after bust in on a kitchen full of Kobolds, accompanied by a pair of Ambush Drakes.

Not satisfied the guys plunged on with their reckless charge through the Kobold’s lair, and into their fifth encounter in a row (without a rest). The Wizard, Ken Lee, has one first level spell left; the Priest of Tempus, Zyler, has one third level spell left- the rest of the guys are low on ‘stuff’.

Not the best time to run into a ‘mass’ of Kobolds then, and yet…


The massive chamber, running over 100 feet north to south, is home to 25+ Kobolds (actually 32 Kobolds including two Wyrmpriests). Furthermore the chamber has a trio of doors leading from it, and two massive sets of stone stairs leading up thirty or so feet onto a balcony (inhabited?) which circuits the entire chamber.

And so the war against the Kobolds begins.

Oh and the chamber behind the guys, the aforementioned kitchen, is blazing merrily having been turned into a firestorm by Ken Lee’s last Fireball spell. Retreat is possible, but not without risk.

2) Kobold War.


Zyler and Grimm, the Order of the Gauntlet incarnate, rush into action- somewhat surprisingly both of them develop tactical nous, more of this in a moment. From the entrance to the chamber Zalt fires his Eldritch Blasts and Goren his magical longbow- surprised Kobold’s die in agony.

Grimm meantime double times forward- straight through the first gawping bunch of Kobolds and into the second clutch- the Paladin unleashes a Thunderwave (a one off power granted to him for success in a previous quest), the effect of the spell is… disappointing (he rolls 2d8 for ‘3’ Thunder damage). The Kobolds surrounding the Paladin of Tempus mostly scatter, a little inconvenienced rather than actually wounded.

Zyler rushes into the first group of Kobolds and unleashes his Spirit Guardians- the Kobolds are caught in a sudden swirling cloud of angelic spirits- wielding a variety of nasty weapons and set on destroying the small humanoids.

Ken Lee aims a Sleep spell into the mix and sends three Kobolds to slumber- that’s the Wizard’s last spell.

The chamber is in chaos- the guys have announced their arrival spectacularly.

Zalt continues with his Eldritch Blasts- Kobolds continue to die; meantime Zyler’s Spirit Guardians start weeding out the lame and sickly- in truth the Kobolds struggle to survive the spell’s 3d8 Radiant damage- save for half; very few within the power’s compass make it through the terror. Those that do are smashed down by the Priest of Tempus wielding Painbringer (effectively?), his magical warhammer.

Zyler is in hog heaven- the Battle Priest, most sessions, rushes into the thickest part of the combat- serving as a magnet for attacks (he’s AC 21), but almost always fails to make much headway through the enemies. Grimm is for killing- usually.

Five Kobolds fall to either Zyler’s weapon or his spell, the grinning Priest marches forward- his Spirit Guardians keeping pace with him- like a wall of ghostly death.

It also doesn’t help the DM that Zyler’s dice have finally caught fire (only 40 sessions in)- over the course of the next few rounds Zyler will have cause to roll 20+ sets of 3d8 damage dice- he rolls 12+ for all but one of the attempts, I know this because I’ve just read through the chat window text from Fantasy Grounds.

Ken Lee, Zalt and Goren remain in cover and mooch forward, keeping a little way behind the furious Grimm and Zyler. The trio make use of missile weapons and cantrips- picking more Kobolds off, even Ken Lee is on fire with his crossbow- he never misses, and every hit’s a kill.

The guys are however now starting to take hits as the Kobolds organise themselves- retreating from the terrifying Zyler the small humanoids make use of their slings. They cannot however do enough damage to keep the Spirit Guardians from advancing, the Priest of Tempus ends another four Kobolds with spell and Painbringer.

Grimm meantime is a whirling dervish, killing three Kobolds every round with Hewer his magical greatsword.

Zyler and Grimm however continue to take hits.

The Kobolds rally briefly, as another eight of their number exit from rooms around the chamber and join the fight, the first gang of four Kobolds emerging behind Grimm and Zyler, charging straight into Ken Lee and Zalt, the artillery in the rear. It gets fraught for a while- particularly when Zalt gets stabbed repeatedly, that is until the Kobolds are quickly accounted for- Zalt is forced to take up his Shillelagh to put the small humanoids down.

For almost all of the encounter Goren remains hidden from his enemies, just every now and then an arrow whistles into the midst of the Kobolds and accounts for another of their number.

Zyler and Grimm’s advance does not however go unnoticed- the two Kobold Wyrmpriests reveal themselves, and then moments later begin flinging Flaming Energy Orbs at Zyler. The Priest is quickly bloodied, and yet continues his advance- five more Kobolds succumb to his spell and warhammer.

The guys are winning, they’re certain- right up to the point another eight Kobolds appear up on the balcony above and begin to rain down stones upon them- again Zyler is their primary target. The Priest takes more hits, and then seconds later is engulfed in flames as one of the Kobold Wyrmpriests uses its Breath Weapon on him, he’s very quickly reduced to only a handful of hit points (on 4 hit points). Goren takes care of the offending Wyrmpriest with an arrow to the throat, the Rogue is however running out of ammunition.

The Kobold slingers, up on the balcony, also share the love with Grimm- the Paladin is also heavily wounded- beyond bloodied, as is Zalt, and of course Zyler- the Priest is also without spells, or Healing Potions.

The guys confidence is ebbing- things get worse.

Yapping and barking overhead come another gang of Kobolds- Urds, Winged Kobolds- the five take flight gripping large rocks- dropping bombs on the adventurers below, and flying high above the compass of Zyler’s Spirit Guardians.

Ken Lee’s Shield spell (from Dawn Guard his Staff of Defence) is the only thing keeping the Wizard from being bloodied- several of the Kobold slingers, and a pair of Urds concentrate their attacks on the unarmoured adventurer.

Things are officially getting tense, although the guys are not ready to quit yet, there are very few Kobolds left on the lower level- Zyler accounts for the second Kobold Wyrmpriest, Goren starts shooting down the Urds- while Zalt and then Ken Lee scurry into one of the side chambers, they desperately need to get into cover- the pair are taking far too many hits.

Alas their sudden disappearance only concentrates the fire on Grimm and Zyler, and also Goren who is spotted briefly- the Rogue takes a run of hits after revealing himself in a headlong dash across the chamber, he’s bloodied in a matter of seconds. Grimm meantime gets to Zyler and uses his Action to Lay on Hands to keep the Priest from falling- they need Zyler’s Guardian Spirits to protect them.

Meanwhile Ken Lee and Zalt take it in turns to rush out from their hiding place and fire crossbow bolts and Eldritch Blasts at any Kobolds they can see.

Zyler suddenly has an idea- the Priest of Tempus rushes halfway up the set of stairs in the southern section of the great chamber- two Kobold Urds are very suddenly caught in the compass of his Spirit Guardians, and in moments eviscerated by the vicious angels.

The guys are back to grinning again- the tide is turning; at which point the bastard GM has twelve more Kobolds arrive in style.

The dirty dozen repel into the chamber- from the northern section of the balcony, effectively cutting off the guys retreat. To add a little foolishness to this endeavor I had each Kobold make a DC 8 Dexterity check to accomplish this task- two of the dozen fail their checks and land very hard and succumb to Falling Damage. Three more Kobold repelers manage to critically fail the check and fail to grasp the rope before leaping from the balcony, thier part in this adventure is spectacularly short.

You’ve got to love Kobolds- five dead on the way down, the guys are laughing like drains, that is until the Kobolds unbar the double doors to the north and yank them open.

The flickering fires of the chamber creep in to reveal the northern chamber- standing a good way back from the doorway is a massive (ten foot tall) giant Stone Dwarf.

“Oh Shit!” Zalt offers, Ken Lee concurs in graphic style.
Grimm meanwhile glances up- “It’s just a statue”, the Paladin shakes his head as the Warlock and Wizard colour.

At which point a Troll comes charging from the chamber- the Kobolds that released the beast pointing and yapping eagerly at the creature, pointing towards the guys at the far end of the chamber.


“Oh Shit!” Zalt offers, Ken Lee concurs in graphic style.
“Switch targets!” Grimm adds.

Ken Lee forgets himself and fails to duck back into cover, the Wizard is rewarded by a Kobold Urd- it drops a rock (with a Critical Hit) on him- he’s bloodied and beyond, a moment later Goren shoots down the Winged Kobold. Zalt accounts for the last Urd with a (Critical Hit) Eldritch Blast, a moment later one of the Kobold Slingers on the balcony goes the same way (with another Critical Hit).

Goren has still not found cover- he takes another (Critical) hit, it’s getting really tight- a second later he’s hit once again.

Ken Lee remembers himself- fires a Fire Bolt into the approaching Troll- that’ll stop it from Regenerating, the Wizard ducks back into his hidey hole- the Troll changes direction, he’s after Ken Lee now.

Grimm is getting fretful- “Has anyone got any Scrolls left?”
“I have Spare the Dying” Zyler replies.
“Keep it handy.” The Paladin replies.

Goren at last finds cover and then sinks an arrow into the Troll.

Zalt hits a Kobold on the balcony above with an Eldritch Blast (his third Critical Hit in a row)- alas his damage dice let him down, the Kobold survives. The Warlock fires again and ends the nasty humanoid.

Zyler and Grimm stomp forward to meet the Troll- the beast is slashed and clawed by the Priest’s Spirit Guardians, and a second later thumped hard by Painbringer, Zyler’s magical warhammer. Ken Lee dodges out and hits the Troll with a second Fire Bolt, the beast cannot lay a hand on Grimm- the Paladin taunts it and Dodges.

Grimm and Zyler continue to take hits from the few Kobold slingers that are left in action above, now reinforced by the Kobolds behind the Troll- that freed the beast, the Priest of Tempus (and his Spirit Guardians) are almost down. Zyler dodges around the Troll, so that his Spirit Guardians can get better acquainted with the Kobolds in the rear- the Kobolds suffer, and mostly die. Zyler meanwhile smashes the Troll again, the beast also suffers as his Spirit Guardians tear at it- it’s bloodied and still cannot Regenerate.

A moment later Goren sinks an arrow into the beast, straight through the creature’s neck (for 24 damage- Ouch!). Then it’s Grimm turn, he issues his Vow of Enmity (Advantage on attacks), uses his Great Weapon Master ability (-5 To Hit & +10 Damage) and then cuts hard- the Troll suffers (taking 20 damage). The Paladin goes again- adding a little more spice to the mix by expending a second level spell slot on his Divine Smite- for an extra 3d8 Radiant damage. The DM shuts his eyes… a total of 39 points of damage- the Troll is down.

At which point, as the DM continues to gasp in shock- his Troll didn’t land a hit- Zalt dodges back out and ends another two Kobolds with his Eldritch Blasts, Zyler’s Spirit Guardians account for the last three Kobolds in the lower section.

The remaining Kobolds on the balcony above flee as Grimm the Trollslayer roars and screams… (with an Advantage Intimidate check).

The fight is won.

The bastards.
