An enforced (and unwanted) break- we last played on the 13th July, then my hard drive died- although I didn’t know that was happening at the time, lots of other things were tried to fix the machine before it finally became obvious that the HD was dying. Damn IT- if it wasn’t the greatest thing on the planet I’d be fuming…
A quiet session, although we got a lot done, and got back on track.
1) Brief Recap.
We’re in Womford- the guys have travelled here from Red Larch- they have people to see in Womford, and are also inclined to attend the ‘Ironwrought’, a competition of skill at arms (and other things), held annually in Bargewright (just a mile or so from Womford).
En route to Womford the guys ran into Avarthel the Druid in the Cairn Woods- the guys decided to help him out by investigating Kobold activity in an ancient Dwarven Hold; this lead to much bloody action, including the guys taking on more or less the entire Kobold tribe (and a Troll). Later they got up close and personal with ‘Trimat’, a Chimera- the beast nearly incinerated Zyler and Grimm before being forced to flee the fight, badly wounded.
The remaining Kobolds bargained for their lives- and then were forced to spill the beans, the tribe had been recently corrupted by a Bugbear Lord who flew in on a Manticore- it seems the worship of Tiamat is on the increase.
From there the guys head off to Womford again.
2) Across the River.
The guys have to find the ferryman before they can cross the Dessarin River to the far bank, alas Drathgar the Ferryman has already parked his boat for the night- thankfully money talks. The hold up is extended when Ken Lee is persuaded to part with a large chunk of change- Sterrel, a local provisioner, sells the Elf a Warhorse; while he’s waiting on the ferry.
Eventually the guys make their way across the Dessarin River- the fast lowing watercourse is over 250 feet wide, Zalt notes what remains of an ancient Dwarven bridge across the river- runes on the central pillar read- “Ironford”, and “Bronzehammer”. The Warlock speculates that Womford, sometime in its past, was known as Ironford- and inhabited by the Bronzehammer’s- the Dwarven clan which also constructed the Kobold-inhabited complex the adventurers just recently explored. The oddest moment however comes close to the far bank, a Lizardman climbs out of the river and then walks nonchalantly into town- the guys are slightly fazed.
The guys head into the town proper, concentrated on the east bank, the largest local Inn- the Old Bridge is rammed with folks spilling out onto the street- a brief chat later with a local reveals that Womford is packed with people waiting to head off to the Ironwrought competition at Bargewright- starting in only two days.
The guys search out The Green Apple, a smaller Inn, seemingly catering more for the locals, they head in- secure rooms (the last in Womford), food and ale. They also spot Squire Welch, the Lizardman suffers a little abuse from Tharrma, the Dwarven matron proprietor of the Inn.
3) Sqwelch’s Story.
Squire Welch = Sqwelch.
The guys, lead initially by Ken Lee, make a bee-line for Sqwelch, introduce themselves and then chat extensively with the Lizardman, a startling thing happens- the guys are friendly and complementary, they’re also free and easy with the drinks- and Sqwelch is an alcoholic (this quickly becomes apparent). The Lizardman, slowly at first, begins to tell his tale; the story is-
a) He hates Goblins- no, he really hates Goblins.
b) There are a bunch of Goblins parked in an old crumbling tower about half-a-day away, in the Dankmire (a nearby thickly vegetated swamp). The Goblins just turned up a week or more ago- a big group of them, with tents- and wolves.
c) Sqwelch really hates Goblins.
d) Sqwelch’s real name is Squire Welch, he was once a Human Fighter, before an encounter with a Goblin Sorcerer who polymorphed him into his present form- he has been a Lizardman for 10 years now. Sqwelch is not keen on his present form.
e) Sqwelch also reveals that he has seen a trio of Gargoyles flying in the area- the guys are in search of Gargoyles, they have been observed by the creatures- perhaps repeatedly on their journeys in the valley.
f) Sqwelch tells the guys a little about the Ironwrought competition, which will take place in Bargewright in two days time. The competition runs for three days, each evening a separate event- a test of strength or… manliness, the prizes are big for each event and at the end of the three days an overall winner is declared. The last event, on the final night, is always a melee event. For the three days of the competition a truce is declared and all manner of humanoids attend (and enter) the event- including Gnolls, Orcs, Goblins, Hobgoblins- and at least one Drow. The Ironwrought is also known for its market- with easily a hundred stalls and tents- hence Womford being packed with traders et al at the moment.
g) Last bit- Sqwelch is slightly surprised to meet Grimm, apparently a fellow called ‘Grimm’ met with his friend Avarthel the Druid yesterday- Grimm (our Grimm) was nowhere near Womford yesterday, this event clearly needs further investigation.
The guys enjoy the Lizardman’s chatter- particularly when the stinky fellow disrobes in the Inn, he may be a drunk but he’s very good company- the adventurers eventually retire to their rooms (which are expensive- as is everything in town at the moment). Several of the guys are a little worse for wear… Goren shortly before this takes his leave of the gang, he has another errand to run this evening.
4) Secret Meetings.
Goren heads off to the Old Bridge Inn, there he meets with Kellin Shadowbanks- who knows what it is said during this secret meeting.
The next morning Ken Lee heads off for a secret meeting with Sertiernen, the Halfling Wizard, again the details of this event are shrouded in mystery.
Sqwelch picks up the guys in the morning, and after a drink or two- just to fortify the nerves, the Lizardman leads the guys around the town for a little light shopping- and further introductions, the adventurers have a lot of minor treasures to sell, Sqwelch knows just the person.
5) Introductions in Womford.
During the adventurer’s perambulations Grimm visits with Morlin Coalhewer- the enormous, and massively able, weapon and armour smith. The Paladin of Tymora puts in an order for a set of full plate. He’s also informed by the mastersmith that the greatsword he wields- Hewer, was crafted with the sole purpose of destroying Goblins. Morlin hopes that the Paladin will have much joy, and success, with the weapon.
Morlin is a good guy.
The guys investigate the rest of the western bank of Womford, and then spend an hour or more with Jarett North, owner of Jarett’s Sundries, the young woman is keen to purchase many of the adventurers finds and treasures- haggling continues for a good while, the guys are keen to amass as much money as they can. Warhorses and better armour are very expensive it seems, also Zyler is saving for a Temple of Tempus all of his very own.
Eventually the guys head over on the ferry, crossing the river to report back to Avarthel the Druid.
6) Report to Avarthel.
The visit to the Druid’s camp doesn’t start well- Phaendra, who Grimm promised to look after during her visit to Womford and the Bargewright competition is not at all happy. The guys left her with the Druid when they headed off to kill Kobolds, they then got back to Womford (yesterday) and instead of coming to pick her up went to the pub and got drunk with a Lizardman!
Grimm suggests that Phaendra make the tea- he doesn’t help his cause.
The guys report in to Avarthel- about the Kobolds, the Troll and the nasty Chimera “Trimat”, supposedly the daughter of Tiamat. The Druid is aghast, he has little idea what is going on in the valley- he promises he will make further enquiries where and when he can- and report back to the guys, who agree to keep investigating matters.
The last bit of news is about the alternative Grimm- Avarthel was visited yesterday by a different Grimm- a Dwarf Cleric of Moradin bearing the same name as the Paladin of Tempus. Grimm (the Dwarf) is the leader of a group of Dwarven adventurers (seven of them- that’s right, the Seven Dwarves). The group chatted for a while with the Druid and then headed off- south, into the hills and wilds of the Valley. The Dwarves it seems are out to serve up a big hot slice of their racial hatred- they’re Kobold killers, looking to destroy as many of the little creatures as they can.
The guys are keen to meet the Seven Dwarves some time in the future, but that- and many more things, are for next time.
