Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition
The Red Larch Adventure.

We play using Fantasy Grounds and Skype, usually once a week for approx. 3 hours.

Session #043 Wednesday 10th August 2016
Fire & Acid.

The antidote for last weeks quiet session- it got tense this week, and very busy- although not initially for Ken Lee, he got to have a lie down early in the piece.


The Action-

1) Brief Recap & More Chatter in Womford.

We’re still in Womford- the guys have travelled here from Red Larch- they have people to see in Womford, and are also inclined to attend the ‘Ironwrought’, a competition of skill at arms (and other things), held annually in Bargewright (just a mile or so from Womford).


The guys are however itching to kill something, this after the enforced break when my HD died. Sqwelch, the guy’s new found Lizardman friend has the perfect antidote- he’s discovered a ruined tower with a camp of Goblins laired there. Sqwelch hates Goblins, a Goblin Sorcerer turned him into a Lizardman ten years ago…

The adventurers are therefore keen to kick ass, Grimm and Zyler however still have a meeting to take- with Captain Soranna, the head of the Womford Watch, she’s also a high ranking member of the Order of the Gauntlet. The pair drag their colleagues to the meeting, there’s much chatter- the guys run through their experiences, the things they have witnessed so far during their time in the valley-

a) Pale (and ferocious) Gnolls attacking the Rusty Gorgon Inn.

b) Gargoyles or other flying creatures watching them from high above during their travels.

c) Bandits on the road outside of Red Larch.

d) The Believers- strange cultists laired beneath Red Larch- and the odd priest that lead them.

e) Frostshield Orcs on the move in the hills.

f) A Necromancer with an undead Beholder worshipping a great ‘eye’, and lastly,

g) A tribe of Kobolds in Cairn Woods, babysitting a Chimera- Trimat.

There’s a lot going on.

Soranna listens intently and then tells the guys what she knows about events- which as it turns out is not a great deal, or at least she’s not saying much, it seems her authority (and her vision) doesn’t extend much beyond the town of Womford. The Captain, the guys come to understand, relies on the Knights of Samular- based at Summit Hall, for news from further afield; Womford Watch patrols don’t range far into the wilds.

Soranna’s concern however is with the fast approaching Ironwrought competition, the sunny weather hasn’t helped the situation- it seems various humanoids, and other undesirable creatures, are much more active with the weather being so good. Soranna therefore wants Grimm and Zyler to attend the Ironwrought, to win it if they can, and to make sure nothing untoward happens there, the good Captain also agrees to mentor Grimm and Zyler to the next rank in the Order of the Gauntlet- to guide them where and when she can.

Chatter over the guys top up their supplies and then hit the road with Sqwelch, time for a brief jaunt out to slay Goblins.

2) Ankhegs!

The guys hit the road, Ken Lee on his new mount- “Pretty Ladyboy 3.0”, a fine warhorse.

Only two hours out of Womford, following a much used trail through the plains- and Sqwelch’s directions, a murder of crows is spotted ahead- Goren sneaks in to take a look, the crows are feasting on a dead cow- there’s nothing to see here. The guys discuss whether to go around or go straight ahead- Sqwelch solves the problem, the Lizardman is a little ‘tipsy’, he charges the crows scattering the group. The guys are less than impressed, Sqwelch is a liability, they however head on- just in time to see a large and terrible insect burst through the dirt of the track and spray the Lizardman with its acid spittle- an Ankheg.


Ken Lee, the Wizard (just reminding the reader, and the player) charges into action on Pretty Ladyboy 3.0- trampling the giant insect (a little). Things go badly very quickly.


A second Ankheg bursts from the ground just to the north of the majority of the adventurers, it bathes Zalt and Zyler, and their mounts in acid, cue much screaming. Meanwhile a third Ankheg bursts forth just to the side of Ken Lee- the Wizard is Grabbed, crushed and burnt by acid (with a Critical Hit reducing Ken Lee to 2 hit points). A moment later the first Ankheg repeats the trick with Pretty Ladyboy 3.0 (the Warhorse is also on 2 hit points.

Things are going badly- particularly as none of the warriors can get to Ken Lee in time, even on horseback, in time to rescue the Mage. Sqwelch recovers and begins hacking at the first Ankheg, the guys join the attack and bring the creature down- saving Pretty Ladyboy 3.0 in the process, they also badly wound the Ankheg nearest to them (#2), the creature retreats into its tunnel. Zyler, the Priest of Tempus, scurries after it- hacking furiously at the beast.

In the same instant the last remaining Ankheg (#3) crushes the life out of Ken Lee and drags the Wizard down into its tunnel- Zalt, Grimm and Sqwelch follow after.

The two Ankheg’s are quickly before down (and Ken Lee manages to pass two Death Saves), just in time as the Ankheg Matriach arrives (bigger and nastier). Grimm takes a beating and is Grabbed and Crushed, not for long- the Paladin of Tymora hits big (Great Weapon Fighter +10 damage, Divine Smite +3d8) and lands a Critical Hit and decapitates the creature with one great stroke of Hewer his magical greatsword.

Ken Lee remarkably, in the same instant, rolls a ‘20’ on his Death Save and blinks open his eyes.

The fight is won, a remarkably tough encounter.

But that’s not all…

3) Secrets of the Ankheg’s Lair.

The lair is a filthy affair- exactly as it should be, with hundreds of bodies (actually bones) of a variety of quadrupeds, and perhaps a few humanoids. The strange thing however is the presence of a great red eye daubed, in blood the guys discover, on a wall of the lair- on the far side of an underground stream. The image has been recently done- the blood still wet.

The guys are very unhappy to find this- Sqwelch is a little upset about it too, the Lizardman wonders aloud who he is travelling with… He’s particularly freaked out as he has made this journey many times and never encountered Ankheg here previously, Sqwelch is of the opinion that the guys are being targeted.

The guys ponder for a while, reply what they know about the eye symbol, or can infer- Zalt talks extensively about the nature of cults; the symbol however has them creeped.

Eventually they head on- quickly now, they want to get to the Goblins before they lose light.

4) Burn the Goblins.

Two hours later the guys are in place- their horses (now healed) hidden in a dell, they have followed Squelch through the marshy woodlands and then quietly moved into dense vegetation to observe the Goblin camp ahead.

There are half a dozen Goblins in the camp, and a Worg- with possibly more Goblins in the tents; also present is a single Goblin and a Worg just outside the tower, a guard- or scout, the lone Goblin is trying to learn how to ride the beast. The Worg is not having any of it.


The only way into the camp is via a log across the river, Sqwelch confirms- the place is in effect an island, the water in the river is also fast flowing.

“We need a distraction.” Grimm states.
Ken Lee’s eyes twinkle.

A few moments later several things happen at once, Goren sinks an arrow into the nearest Worg’s throat and kills it in an instant, the heavier members of the squad- Grimm and Zyler gingerly cross the log into the camp, and then… the camp explodes as Ken Lee (who is not in the best of moods after his scrape with the Ankheg) drops a Fireball into the mix.

Those that survive the blast, and the following conflagration (one badly wounded Worg and a pair of Goblins) flee screaming into the woods.

The only victim of the wobbly log onto the island is Sqwelch- the Lizardman trips and falls into the stream and is swept away screaming profanities as he goes- he gets to the shore a little while later.

Noises emerge from the great tower soon after, more goblinoids are on the way.

The guys get into action, although there are few enemies left to confront, a pair of Goblins are quickly killed- a second later and the doors to the tower open to reveal a beefy looking Hobgoblin Captain and three Hobgoblin warriors. The quartet just in time to be engulfed by a greasy darkness- Zalt’s Hunger of Hagar, the four are left screaming and stumbling in the freezing black of the spell.

The guys have things under control, it’s also the end of the session, I thought I’d give them a little XP now for the Goblins and Worgs.

VERY BAD Tiamat worshipping Kobolds- strange Hobgoblins, a Bugbear Lord (Wizard?). Gargoyles? Ankhegs- BASTARDS!

New Info- Into the wilds in pursuit of Goblins, Ankhegs get fresh with the guys- Ken Lee particularly, and on to the Goblin camp for a bar-b-q.
