Raging Bull!

Grimm, Male Human (Variant) Paladin of Tymora (Sailor) Level 6
Ken Lee, Male High Elf Wizard (Folk Hero) Level 6

Goren Naeris, Male Wood Elf Rogue (Criminal) Level 6 is missing- Pedja is playing Lord Thaelond, the ruler of Bargewright, who is also taking part in the competition.

The Ironwrought!

The Action-

1) Brief Recap.

Short and sweet- the guys are in Bargewright, taking part in the Ironwrought competition- three separate ‘events’ (with prizes) in which competitors from all over the Dessarin Valley (and beyond perhaps) come to compete. The competition is also odd in that humanoids are also invited to take part, including Goblins, Hobgoblins, Orcs, Gnolls etc. Bargewright for the duration of the Ironwrought is neutral ground (see Lord Thaelond’s speech last session).

The competition also marks the last three days of the year; the overall winner is therefore crowned champion for the year.

The first ‘event’ has just started- the guys are Bull Riding.

Staying on the Bull requires (each round) a combination of any two of the following- Acrobatics, Athletics and/or Handle Animal checks, the DC increases each round.

However that’s not the end of it- Zalt and Ken Lee are cheating, the pair are glued to their mounts using Spider Climb spells. The pair get massive advantages to their checks, however they must also make a DC 10 Performance check each round- failures cause the crowd to grow suspicious.

Alas both Zalt and Ken Lee have already failed their first Performance checks- members of the crowd are starting to whisper and point. Obviously when we played through this section I (in effect) put all of the guys, and their competitors, on the Bull at the same time- just moved through them in Initiative order, each taking it in turn to try and stay on the beast.

The competition between the players got particularly fierce- none of them wanted to be the first to fall off, and all of them wanted to be the one to stay on the Bull- to win the thing.

2) Bull Riding.

And so we continue…

Round #2-

The guys all manage to stay on the Bull, although again Ken Lee is not looking the part- the crowd are now whispering furiously- there’s something wrong (one more failure for him, and Zyler, and they will be disqualified).

Of the other competitors Baron Ballbag is having a nightmare- he’s all over the place, it’s a miracle he stays on. Captain Hargas, Kal’Zerth, Lady Lara and Staunch also falter but only for a moment. Carl Drogo makes Baron Ballbag look like a pro, the thick-set Barbarian has to use all of his strength to stay on the beast.

Round #3-

Comp_Lady_Lara.jpgLady Lara, a noble woman from Waterdeep.

Lady Lara is flung from the Bull, she lands hard, rolls with it and escapes the arena, rushing to safety. She’s the first to fall, and is incredibly mad with herself.

Comp_Foo_Yung.jpgFoo Yung, a chop-socky Monk who’s da bomb (apparently).

Zyler notices that the Monk is (or rather was- see below) wearing a stone face mask- just like the bad guys he fought in the Temple of Moving Stones, back in Red Larch. Shame they don’t get a chance to chat to him…

Foo Yung is less fortunate- the Bull tosses the ragdoll Monk into the air and then spears the fellow on its horns; by the time Foo Yung’s body is recovered it has lost one leg- the Monk is very seriously dead.

The crowd are… enthralled.

The players are concerned.

It doesn’t stop there…

Comp_Staunch.jpgStaunch, a fat bloke.

Staunch is also thrown off the beast, however the fat man manages to waddle quickly to safety.

The rest of the guys, by hook or by crook, manage to stay on the Bull.

Round #4-

There’s a lot of action, but no falling off- Ken Lee decides to abandon his Spider Climb spell; the Wizard doesn’t want to get disqualified and he feels that he’s running out of luck with his Performance checks every round- Charisma is, of course, his dump stat.

Zyler (remarkably) is looking good, Lord Thaelond is also doing well, but the most capable competitor so far is Killshot the Halfling, he’s making it look easy.

Round #5-

Comp_Lord_Slather.jpgLord Slather, a ferocious maniac Gnoll bruiser, and also the second favourite to win.

Lord Slather is off, the Gnoll is furious (he usually is)- he’s flung off the Bull and straight into the rail, he looks very beat up- hurting bad, he is incandescent with rage- his Gnoll flunkies do all they can to calm him. It doesn’t work, he’s still seething three hours later in the Inn.

Ken_Lee_Kid.jpgKen Lee, the fire starter.

A moment later the Union Wizard is also off- Ken Lee takes a spill, he takes a bit of bumping and beating but no real injuries. The first PC to fall.

Remarkably Lord Thaelond and Zyler are making their rolls with ease (which is incredible for Christer as his Acrobatics and Animal Handling skills are not good). The pair are taking the time to play to the crowd- all of which rises to Lord Thaelond, the ruler (owner) of Bargewright; Zyler in the meantime has developed a very select audience- a clutch of female Orcs take to throwing their soiled underwear at the Cleric of Tempus.

Round #6-

502c93d21850abfa5158ea010d19be0d.jpgGrimm, the foxy Paladin of Tymora.

Moments later Grimm is off- the Paladin of Tymora is bucked into the air, he lands hard and then scrambles clear, that’s the sixth person to be dismounted- there’s eight left in the competition.

Comp_Captain_Hargas.jpgCaptain Hargas, a slightly older (but very tough) looking Hobgoblin.

And the pace is obviously hotting up- Captain Hargas is the next to go, the aged Hobgoblin manages to retain his dignity, he lands on his feet and strides off, ignoring the raging Bull behind him.

Comp_Carl_Drogo.jpgCarl Drogo, he of the famous brother.

Carl Drogo follows seconds later, the thick-set Human is gored in the process and has to painfully limp away, there’s only six guys left on the Bull- and half of them are PCs (if you include Lord Thaelond).

deathpriest.jpgZalt, a far too clever mad man.

Zalt is the next to fall, the Warlock thanks his stars that he has survived so long.

And let me just add this now- Zyler is the real surprise here, the miracle is he’s still on- his skills are not great and yet he keeps on rolling high (and making good use of his Luck points).

Comp_Baron_Ballbag.jpgBaron Ballbag, a Goblin idiot (mostly inebriated).

To complete the round, at the very last Baron Ballbag is flung high into the air- he lands hard. For a good while the Goblin is unmoving- it takes a while for him to regain consciousness, later he puts his good fortune down to the fact that he was “very, very drunk”.

This round has proved to be the killer, only four guys left in the competition.

Round #7-

Comp_Killshot.jpgKillshot, a lithe and agile Halfling.

The Halfling is flung high into the air, he lands hard- breaking his left arm, Killshot rushes to safety- verbally haranguing himself en route, he’s fourth- there’s no money for coming fourth. This is a big surprise (particularly to the DM)- the Halfling has an excellent skill set for Bull Riding, the second best in the competition.

And so third is…

zyler_shadowsoul.PNGZyler, who shouts TEMPUS! a lot.

Tempus is shucked by the Bull- finally, all around the table the guys cheer (jeer) and applaud, that has been the highest concentration of good (to excellent) dice rolls that Christer (who plays Zyler) has ever produced.

Which just leaves two guys left, and nobody wants the Drow to win…

Comp_Kal_Zerth.jpgKal’Zerth, the favourite to win and a bastard Drow (ask Zyler).

Which is just as well as Kal’Zerth is the next to go, the Drow can stay on no-longer, he steps off the Bull and scurries to safety. There are no cheers from the crowd.

Which just leaves…

Lord_Thaelond.jpgLord Thaelond.

Who also calmly steps off the Bull and strides away to safety, he choses not to attempt to stay on- he’s won.

The crowd go crazy.

Pedja’s quite pleased too.

Soon after Lord Thaelond and Zyler are hoisted onto the shoulders of the crowd and paraded through the Ironwrought (Kal’Zerth, the Drow who came second is ignored). The crowd finally deposit Thaelond and Zyler at the Bargewright Inn.

3) Gambling & Chatting in the Inn.

The guys retire to the Bargewright Inn, which is raucous- all races are either celebrating or commiserating; there’s an awful lot of boozing going on.

The bonus is several of the guys get a pay day- they all had bets on many (all) of the riders, several of them have had their bets come in. Ken Lee and Zyler make a considerable amount of money (over 50gp each), Zyler is also called onto stage to collect his winnings from the Bull Riding- the Priest thanks his mum and dad, and Tempus.

Grimm, who has had a mediocre showing so far this evening, gets into a few games of chance- he manages (with help from Zalt and his ability to communicate telepathically) to win more than a few games of “Find the Lady”. Later on in the evening he also beats a Half-Ogre at arm wresting, the pub goes wild- as does Ken Lee who also had a large bet on Grimm.

Eventually the evening is over, the guys- a little worse for wear, help the bar staff to clear up and make ready for tomorrows events. They also get a chance to have a chat with them, mostly just gossip- the bar staff are not that well informed. The guys are however particularly interested in finding out about the Drow- Kal’Zerth, they however learn nothing of import (some very low rolls from the guys). Meanwhile Zalt does a little creeping around in the dark, with Tempest (his sorta Owl companion) heading up and around to watch over the town- the Warlock also manages to find the fragments of the mask that Foo Yung, the Monk, was wearing during the Bull Riding. The pieces of mask reassembled depict the face and features of a stone man- a gargoyle perhaps.

Eventually the guys find a place to lay their weary heads for the night- mostly dossing down on Zyler’s floor, the Priest of Tempus is gifted a room at Bargewright Inn for the night after coming third in the Bull Riding.

4) More Marketplace & Whack-a-Kobold.

In the morning the guys reconvene, buy food- which proves to be ridiculously expensive, and then head on out into the market (remember the market is massive, it is in effect everywhere). A few more items are bought- including a nice silver holy symbol by Zyler, he’s celebrating; while a bunch more items are sold- the guys still have a few more items (party treasure) to dispose of.

A little later Zyler, Grimm and… well all of them, get involved in a game of Whack-a-Kobold; the game is a life size version of Whack-a-Mole except popping up from the holes are Kobolds- the hammer is a massive two handed affair with a padded straw head.

The game costs 1gp to play- competitors have to make a DC 11, 12, 13 etc. Dexterity based skill check- all the way to a DC 20 check to win 100gp. I know- what a con. Remarkably several of the guys have multiple goes at it. They all fare badly, except one, Zyler tries very hard and gets on a roll- briefly, he is latter mobbed by his female Orc fan club, one of them has had a tattoo done of the Priest- “that is very nice, Mmm.” He gulps and then swallows hard.

Lord Thaelond is the exception, on his first attempt he gets all the way to DC 18, only two more and he would have had it won.

Much fun is had by all…

Until the second event of the Ironwrought competition begins.

5) Let’s Play Darts.

The guys listen intently to the rules of this competition and then start to pile in with the big bets as they are introduced to all of the competitors- all five of them sign up for the event.

But that’s for next session…

Although let’s just take a look at the scoreboard for the Ironwrought after one event-

15pts. Lord Thaelond
12pts. Kal’Zerth
10pts. Zyler
