The Red Larch Adventure.

We play using Fantasy Grounds and Google Hangouts, usually once a week for approx. 3 hours.

Session #059 Wednesday 30th November 2016
The Enemy of my Enemy is my Enemy.

Zalt, Male Half-Elf Warlock (Sailor) Level 7
Grimm, Male Human (Variant) Paladin of Tymora (Sailor) Level 7
Goren Naeris, Male Wood Elf Rogue (Criminal) Level 6 looks a lot like Lord Thaelond, the ruler of Bargewright, at the moment- which is no bad thing.
Zyler, Male Human (Variant) Cleric of Tempus (Hermit) Level 7
Ken Lee, Male High Elf Wizard (Folk Hero) Level 7

Another good session, and the PCs have still not found time to get in a short rest yet, they’ve been racing around almost since the moment they awoke, their resources (or at least there spell powers) are very low (or else entirely spent). Which could prove to be fun next session.

The Action-

0) Here’s the PLOT.

Go here (actually just over there, to the right) for the PLOT page, this is the place that records all the events and info that has been accumulated regarding a variety of plot (maybe) points. Updated weekly- from now.

Also each week the guys will be summarising, deleting, joining together, or else adding to this list.

Oh, and yes there’s plenty going on but that’s because we’re at the start (still-ish), there’s a lot more to come which may bring some of these points together, and some of this info is just, well… info, not really plot at all.

The summaries are going to help a lot (I hope), as the guys are doing them they will also give me the opportunity to see what they are thinking…

1) Recap in Brief.

In (very) short- Bronzehammer ruins, after Sir Gustav and his groupies (and the entrance to Halls of the Hunting Axe). The guys have spent the last Tempus knows how many sessions in the dungeon so far, apart from enemies and traps the only other thing they have encountered are the dead bodies of a number of Sir Gustav’s companions-

Ren, a female Halfling sneak Thief RIP,
Bryn & Cora, very cute twin female Wood Elf Rangers RIP,
Kessa Landau, a beautiful female Half-Elven Wizard,
Eshala, a stunningly beautiful female Human Fighter RIP,
Ulf, a female Dwarven Paladin of Kelemvor (the God of the Dead) RIP, and
Rowan, a beautiful female Elven Fighter.

One of Sir Gustav’s groupies split off from the main party and headed out on their own, why they did this is unknown.

Which just leaves Sir Gustav and one other, and one of the pair is bleeding badly.

Last session the guys got cornered in a dead end and attacked by waves of Ghouls and Ghasts, it went down to the wire with three of the five members of the Union either Paralyzed and Poisoned, or else down and making Death Saves. The bastards however prevailed, and so…

2) Down the Drain.


Drain = Top Right.

After a short break for a Prayer of Healing (courtesy of Zyler), and a bit of Hand Laying On and Potion swigging the guys are in the mood to move out. The DM even takes a moment to make clear that they have bought themselves the time to take a short rest, but these guys are all about the verisimilitude, they rush on…

Well, not quite rush.

First off Zyler and Ken Lee make certain that Sir Gustav and his lone companion went down the drain, the guys very quickly assure themselves that this was the case- they also discover a lot of blood has been spilled in this area (and recently). The drain is just wide enough for the guys to descend, however it is also filled with a myriad ledges, cracks and crevices- and a million and a half beady-eyed rats.

The guys are in a mini game- their task to descend the drain safely, it goes well although several of the Union take hits (nothing major), closest call is Grimm. The Paladin has a Rat land on his face and start clawing, however Grimm has taken precautions, he has Orac (the Driftglobe) in his mouth. The devotee of Tempus opens wide and blinds the furious rodent which falls to its death.

Zyler leads the way down, most of the guys descend by rope- with Wodger up top taking the strain.

The drain leads down into the Underdark, Zyler (for some unknown reason) is happy to see the place…


The chamber is smooth stone illuminated by the purple glow of a myriad sprouting fungi, beneath the guys an ice cold pool of water (only two feet deep). The Priest of Tempus does a little exploring (if only the group had a PC with a Stealth of +11, and a big bag of skills designed for sneaking about and spotting/investigating stuff… if only), Zyler can’t see any threats and therefore calls the other guys down.

The Priest (and a little later Ken Lee, and Lord T) can however hear the far off (but not too far off) sounds of fighting- the trio change their minds several times about which direction this sound is coming from, they do however manage to narrow it down to either from the north east or the south, as these are the only two exits from the chamber.

Ten seconds later, with four of the five guys now down the drain and into the Underdark, Zalt’s still up top, a humanoid-sized (and shaped) hunk of (not) rock detaches itself from the wall and sneaks up on Zyler and Claws and Bites the Priest. The creature is a wild-eyed, and somewhat bloody-looking Troglodyte.

The fight begins.

3) Troglodytes Troglodytes.

Over the course of the next ten to fifteen seconds half-a-dozen or more (more) Troglodytes shuffle into the chamber from the south, and the DM is rolling high- Grimm and Zyler (even with his AC 21) take a beating.

The odd thing is the Troglodytes (all of them) are almost silent in their attacks, they also look to have recently suffered somehow, all of the creatures have blood on their faces- around the mouth, nose, ears and eyes; something bad (nasty) has happened to these guys recently.

Zalt eventually gets down the drain, clinging on to the ceiling of the cavern the Spider Climbing Warlock provides missile support with his Eldritch Blasts.

Lord T spots more Troglodytes heading into the chamber, through the fungi filled north eastern passage, he rushes to hide and take cover, but alas doesn’t find the time to tell Ken Lee about the invading creatures.

Moments later the Wizard is attacked and swarmed, he takes a minor beating- thanks largely to spamming his Shield spell. Ken Lee has a few choice words and phrases for Lord T, mostly ending in “off”.

Meanwhile Grimm and Zyler do their best to draw Troglodyte attacks, and to slay the creatures, the pair are briefly hampered by the Trog’s stench (although oddly Zyler never misses while he’s attacking with Poisoned induced Disadvantage- odd that).

Zalt has to call on Wodger again, his stone servitor, the Warlock however realises that he is no longer in Bronzehammer territory (Wodger can be summoned and dismissed freely in Bronzehammer territory, he can only be summoned once per day and only for an hour outside of the Dwarves ancient realms).

The fight is fast and furious with more Trogs grunting their way into the chamber from both the north and the south passage, the more squishy members of the Union either hide or else take to the ceilings to keep out of the way. The fracas is however always under control, the adventurers soon smash the last Troglodyte down.

The fight is won.

This is a war of attrition, although (perhaps) the guys do not know this yet.

Grimm, Zyler and Ken Lee have again taken a hefty slice of damage (particularly AC 21 Zyler who spends his last Luck point to avoid a Crit, only to have the Trog roll its attack again and hit almost as hard as the first attack- and then attack again and hit some more)- all three adventurers are bloodied or worse. The two holy warriors dish up another host of healing, all of the guys are now officially low on resources.

Furthermore the sounds of fighting are still coming from the passages beyond the watery cavern, the guys are now certain that the noises are coming from the south.

Zalt leads the Union on, there are bloodstains on the walls, and in places drag marks- it quickly becomes very apparent that Sir Gustav and his companion fled this way, it further becomes apparent that the lost Knight was being hounded (still) by another group of barefoot humans.

The guys have seen these tracks before, Zalt is convinced they’re more Ghouls and Ghasts.

The tracks are also less than an hour old, actually much less- but whisper that, don’t let the guys find out.

The Union has no time to waste, it rushes on- directly to the fight.

4) The Enemy of my Enemy is my Enemy.

And when I say the guys rush on into the fight…


The fight has already started, it’s the guys who are late to the table.

In a massive high vaulted natural passage, sloping down to the east, are a group of lean and mean looking Stone Fist Monks, humans all of them, of both sexes- all wearing tarnished peasant garb and each one wearing a mask made of stone. Like the Monk Foo Yung who competed in the Ironwrought competition.

Seconds later the nearest set of Monks are in the faces of the adventurers, they even start to bash Wodger around, the Monk’s blows release a burst of thunder with each hit, and again as per the Troglodytes, these guys are soon marking their mark on the adventurers.

The Union manages to force their way through the Monks (a little), at which point they spy further down the passage the true course of events, a second (larger) group of Stone Fist Monks is making short work of a bunch of Drow, what’s worse the Drow seem to have Sir Gustav- or else a posh looking Knight who is barely conscious, in their grasp. The Dark Elves are however in disarray, and retreating into the narrow passages to the south of the main chamber, with the Monks in pursuit.

WTF is going on here?

Ken Lee tries a little diplomacy- Zyler helps out, surely the two sides are here to wipe out the Drow and rescue Sir Gustav? The rest of the Union meanwhile attempt to ward off the Monk’s blows, they defend for a (very) short while. Honeyed words prove not to be the answer (particularly if you roll a ‘2’ and ‘4’ respectively), the stone-faced terrors are, well… stoney-faced, it seems that no-one from management is present, or else the chop-socky specialists have very strict orders (and possibly very strict masters). The fight is on, and the Monks are tough, note the guys (initially) take on only four of them- there are another half-dozen down the passage, and at least the same number of Drow.

Ken Lee neatly summarises the situation for his colleagues- “the Enemy of my Enemy is also my Enemy”, or as Zyler would have it- “Kill them all, let Tempus sort them out”. The pair get it on…

Zyler summons his Spirit Guardians surrounding himself with Angels of Vengeance, while Ken Lee ignites the world with a Wall of Fire, while warding his companions from the flame- the results are terrifying (from the DMs POV), only two of the four Monks survive the magical bombardment (both very badly wounded). The pair are easily picked off by Zalt’s Eldritch Blasts and Lord T’s deadly accurate arrows, although not before Grimm gets to step through the flames and whirling spirits with his greatsword in hand(s) and strike a mighty pose.

Zalt suggests the guys paint the above image on the side of the Union’s cart, when they get a cart (every adventuring party must have a cart at some point in their careers, if only to carry the treasure).

The guys don’t hang about (why break the habit of a lifetime), they rush to the east and then down the southern passage, the Monks and the Drow are still hard at it here. Zyler is the first into action, and still surrounded by his Spirit Guardians, all enemies suffer the Priest of War’s wrath, although while this is going on several of the Drow seem to be jabbering and gesticulating wildly. It’s fortunate that Zyler doesn’t understand a word they’re saying, also the blood lust is upon the devotee of Tempus- Zyler’s mother was slain by the Drow, revenge is on the cards.

Apres a little more death and destruction (the Drow are falling fast) Ken Lee arrives on the scene and works out that the Drow are calling for help from the guys (although sans compliments, the Union are described as the ‘stupid fools from the stinking Dwarf mines’). Ken Lee gets it- these are the Drow from the Bronzehammer mines beneath Bargewright, Kal’Zerth’s mob. The Wizard shares this new information and the guys very quickly change tact- the Stone Fist Monks (all six are still standing) are now caught between the Drow and the Union.

The fighting is again ferocious, but the home team are in it for the win, and now have the bad guys surrounded.

Mere seconds before the fracas is brought to a suitable conclusion- with Grimm taking down the last two Monks in quick, and brutal, succession; Kal’Zerth puts in an appearance- and yes, the Drow have Sir Gustav, they saved him (if you can believe that) from the strange-looking Monks.

It seems there’s a story to told, just as soon as the fighting is done (maybe).

And with that, as stated above, the last two Monks fall to Grimm.

But the story will have to wait for next session.

The guys have spent seven hours so far travelling in the tunnels, should they wish to return to the surface from here it will take them three and a half hours to do so. They have found six of Sir Gustav’s groupies already- all, alas, dead; it also seems that at least one member of Sir Gustav’s party split off from the group (most odd). That just leaves Sir Gustav and one other left alive (probably)- and one of this pair is bleeding badly, it seems.

5) Last Bit, an Apology to my Players.

I got a little tetchy part the way through this session, and raged a bit- Bob took the brunt of it, I don’t remember the cause I just still feel the shame, forgive me folks. I’ll do my damnedest to keep the temper in check in future.

6) The Final Last Bit.

You really should have rested earlier, the Monks… they’re just Minions, and besides they did their job… they were just the warm up act- still at least some of the Drow are still alive.

New Info- To the climax- down the drain (and through the rats) after only fifteen minutes of rest, into the Underdark, a chance to meet the Troglodytes. Then rush on into the midst of a fight that has already started- Stone Fist Monks vs. Drow (who have Sir Gustav). The guys wade through the bad guys only to discover a little later that the Drow (as it happens) are not the bad guys (maybe).
