Session #066 Wednesday 1st February 2017
Paradise of the Dragon Lords.

Zalt, Male Half-Elf Warlock (Sailor) Level 7
Grimm, Male Human (Variant) Paladin of Tymora (Sailor) Level 7
Zyler, Male Human (Variant) Cleric of Tempus (Hermit) Level 7
Ken Lee, Male High Elf Wizard (Folk Hero) Level 7

Bob who plays Ken Lee, Male High Elf Wizard (Folk Hero) Level 7 is with us from Australia, staying in a flat in Sydney Harbour, part way through the game (start at 7.30 AM in Oz) Bob holds up his phone so we can we watch ships passing in the aforementioned Sydney Harbour- the world is oh so small it seems at times.

Alas Pedja who plays Goren Naeris, Male Wood Elf Rogue (Criminal) Level 7 who looks a lot like Lord Thaelond, the ruler of Bargewright, at the moment; is unable to make it to the screen. Simon (as always) bots him in action.

The Action-

1) Recap in Brief.

The guys are in Dhol Kuldhir, former redoubt of the Bronzehammer Dwarves, the place is filled with fungi and also Kobolds that have succumbed (somehow) to the aforementioned fungi. The Kobolds are not pleased to see the guys- the Union are in search of the ‘door at the end’.

Whatever that could be?

They’re on the last leg of their journey (possibly), according tot eh captured Kobold High Priestess Sha-Ron the Dragon Lord’s Paradise is the only chamber the Union has not explored yet, cue the finale.

2) The Dragon Lord’s Paradise.

And so the Union’s adventures in Dhol Khuldhir continue, the guys take a ten minute rest and re-equip- this after Zalt’s encounter with the exploding Yellow Mould riddled Kobold corpse. Then, much recovered, the team head south- to ‘paradise’, the home of the ‘Dragon Lords’; or at least that’s what High Priestess Sha-Ron told them.

The Union head into an ante-chamber, more fungi and the ancient and stinky remains of straw sleeping pallets, and a few mouldy crates. There are a pair of closed doors to the south, one of which is slightly ajar. The Union neglect to search the ante-chamber (the DM smiles and nods to himself, they will regret this later). Lord T is sent forward, in silent mode, to have a spy through the doors; the next chamber on is massive- and filled to the ceiling in places with fungi, a riot of colours and varieties- from five foot high toadstools, to massive foot thick creeping vines. The atmosphere within the chamber is thick with spores. The Rogue spots a somewhat stunted Green Dragon Wyrmling capering atop one of the taller toadstools directly ahead, Lord T also notes that beneath this fungi is a pile of treasure- tributes to the Dragon Lord’s perhaps. A second, equally stunted, Green Dragon Wyrmling is spotted dashing about within the fungi forest, the pair are playing a game perhaps- hide and seek. Lord T also manages to spot a trio of small plant-like creatures, also hidden within the fungi forest, Twig Blights.

The Dragon Lord’s Paradise.

Lord T retreats to tell his friends, the Union draw breath and ready their attack- the order of the day is to kick the doors open and hit the Dragon Lords with all they’ve got, but to stay out of the chamber to draw the inhabitants out. Not a bad plan, although…

Twig Blight.

Lord T’s bow sings and the nearest Twig Blight falls (after a Crit for 42 damage- talk about overkill), Zyler Blesses his companions and roars “TEMPUS!”, Zalt blasts the Green Dragon Wyrmling atop the toadstool with twin Eldritch Blasts. Alas the Wyrmling reacts instantly, it’s as if the creature knew that the guys were there… which it did. The Wyrmling leaps down from its perch, gambols forward and then breathes out a fog of green-tinged sickly poisonous gas; Zyler and Grimm are left choking.

Green Dragon Wyrmling.

Ken Lee launches a Shatter spell into the mix, destroying a small portion of the fungi forest- alas his damage rolls are so low that not even a single Twig Blight succumbs to his magic. Wodger steps in and smashes a second Twig Blight down, at which point emerging from a stand of fungi within the ante-chamber comes a Vine Blight, a six foot tall vaguely humanoid-shaped conglomeration of snaking vegetable tendrils. The ante-chamber quickly become difficult terrain, and Lord T is grasped and restrained.

Vine Blight.

More Blight creatures emerge from their hiding places, either from within the fungi forest in the chamber ahead, or else from the straw bedding and ruined packing cases in the ante-chamber; suddenly the Union has enemies within their midst.

Grimm goes to work (with all his usual bonuses- Great Weapon Fighter, Oath of Enmity, Divine Smite etc.), seconds later the first Green Dragon Wyrmling is sliced in two, the other Dragon Lord has taken to hiding in the fungi forest. The Paladin, for good measure, also cuts down a Needle Blight as it emerges to challenge him.

Needle Blight.

Lord T, unable to escape the clutching vines (still restrained) keeps up missile support; yet more Twig Blights rush forth- Zalt is clawed, while Ken Lee throws up a Shield as the Wizard is quickly swamped by the vicious plants. Zyler meanwhile is the destroyer of all things flora, Painbringer- his magical Warhammer smashes another pair of the creatures down. Zalt accounts for a Vine Blight with his Eldritch Blasts, while Wodger continues to swing merrily.

Yet another Needle Blight emerges from the fungi and riddles Grimm with a volley of spiny darts, the Paladin is beyond bloodied, it’s all getting a little chaotic, and so Ken Lee drops the bomb- or else the Fireball, destroying a vast swathe of the fungi jungle ahead- and also accounting for a pair of Needle Blights and a trio of Twig Blights. The fiery blast rocks the chamber and reveals through the burning devastation an ancient looking set of double doors (hidden behind the fungi forest), clearly of Bronzehammer design- Dhol Kuldhir, ‘the door at the end’?

The few remaining plant enemies redouble their efforts, remember there’s also another Green Dragon Wyrmling hidden in the fungal forest. Grimm is clawed again, while yet another Vine Blight emerges and sends out a skirt of snaking vines, Zalt and Lord T, who has only just escaped the last lot of restraining vines, are both caught in the Blight’s compass. The second Green Dragon Wyrmling dashes out and bathes the Union in its poisonous breath, Zyler and Grimm are now badly wounded- almost down. Grimm screams out “Healing!” and pointedly looks at Zyler, his brother in arms, the Priest of Tempus shrugs and replies- “no spells left”. In the background the DM cackles with delight.

Grimm slashes horribly at the newly revealed Wyrmling, almost killing it with one horrendous blow, alas his follow up attack is off-balance and wide of the mark, that is until Zyler screams at the Paladin and applies his Guided Strike; the second Wyrmling is hit again and all but destroyed (on 1 hit point).

Lord T meanwhile is struggling, and unable to escape the grasping vines. Zyler smashes another Twig Blight down and then takes aim at the surviving Dragon, Painbringer smashes the creature’s skull. Back in the ante-chamber the remaining Vine Blight continues to make its presence felt- Ken Lee is added to the list of Union members restrained- what’s more the Wizard is being crushed by the creature (and a Critical Hit, nice). Zalt continues blasting, Wodger continues smashing (although the stone golem seems to be missing more often than hitting). The Union are, seemingly, still in a jam- their enemies are still amongst them; Ken Lee decides to clear the decks. The second Fireball explodes more or less at the mage’s feet, although shaped to exclude the Wizard and his companions (save for Wodger who takes the full force of the blast). The fight is more or less over in seconds- two Twig Blights, two Needle Blights, and two Vine Blights are destroyed in the fiery conflagration. Just leaving a smouldering Vine Blight and a badly wounded Needle Blight still in the fight, alas Wodger is now also very badly wounded. Zalt is not happy, the Warlock’s mood is made worse when the last Needle Blight fires a volley of thorns into him, he is also bloodied now; in reply Zalt blasts the Blight that attacked him dead. Grimm cuts down the last enemy, at bloody last. The fight is won, but it went down to the wire.

3) Find the Door, Skin the Dragons.

What comes next- well you would think the guys would take a break from the action, or at least take a moment to refresh themselves (they have plenty of Potions of Healing, and a Scroll of Mass Healing) but oh no… Order of the day, for at least four of the five members of the Union, is to skin the two dead Green Dragons, Grimm is measuring up for a pair of boots, Zyler is not sure what item of clothing he is looking forward to sporting, the adventurers in short are trophy hunting.

Ken Lee is the odd man out- the Wizard wanders off to examine the ancient doors revealed by his Fireball spell. Alas the action is concentrated with his colleagues.

Things go badly very quickly, the freshly skinned corpses of the dead Dragons twitch and writhe even in death, and once the skin is removed the gang can see why- both creatures are infected with a million little writhing tendrils. Clearly the beasts are suffering from the same malaise that turned the Kobolds into mindless automatons. The Union are wary, and so they should be- the first Dragon corpse, a moment or so later, explodes- in the dead Dragon’s place is a massive (eight feet tall and wide) creature made from a swirling mass of plant fibres and sporting extensive searching tentacles. The great plant creature seems to split in two as it opens wide- the Tendriculos’ fanged maw is terrifying to behold. A second or two later and the second Dragon corpse disgorges its contents- there are two of the beasts.

The fighting starts, hang on- didn’t it only just stop thirty seconds ago?

So, the fighting starts- AGAIN, and the guys are already out of spells (I think), and badly beaten.

This should be fun.

4) Vegetable War (ongoing).

Zalt hits the big red button- the Warlock screams at the Tendriculos closest to him and Banishes the great plant beast; an instant later the aforementioned Tendriculos finds itself drifting in a starry black space only accompanied by the sound of lift muzak.

The Tendriculos will be back in ten rounds… the fight will never last that long.

Mere seconds later the Union spy half-a-dozen or more Vegepygmys heading towards them, not from the fungi forest but from the area to the north. Several of the plant creatures still wear the torn fleshy remains of the Kobolds. Basically the Vegepygmies were inside the fungi-infected Kobolds.

It gets nasty.

Very quickly.

Grimm gets nasty very quickly, the Paladin piles on all of his super powers and starts hacking at the remaining Tendriculos, in reply the great plant beast manages to fail to corral any of the members of the Union with its flailing tentacles.

Ken Lee drops a Shatter into the mix, and rolls high this time- plant life everywhere is destroyed. However, the half-a-dozen Vegepymy very quickly turn into a dozen, and then eventually two dozen; just as soon as one of the creature’s is cut down another (at least) is ready to rush in to plug the gap.

The Union are in two fights- Zyler and Lord T are fighting the huge plant beast, while Grimm and Wodger attempt to keep the Vegepymies at bay. Ken Lee and Zalt are in the rear, dividing their ranged fire and blasts between the foes.

The great plant beast proves to be too tough for Zyler and Lord T, although the creature keeps missing with its attacks (my dice suck). Grimm is forced to drop back; the Paladin goes full throttle and almost destroys the Tendriculos (down to 6 hit points). The plant monster however has the last laugh, it’s great tentacles snake out and grab Grimm and wrench the holy warrior off his feet and into the air. A second later and Grimm is swallowed by the beast.

Oh Shit!

The room goes quiet- for a second, “TEMPUS!” is the call. “I am coming for you my brother!” Zyler screams.

Another second later and four Magic Missiles slam into the plant monster, which collapses in slow stages, its great gaping maw held aloft by Grimm as the Paladin steps back out of the beast- he shivers and dry heaves for a moment and then rushes back into the fight.

What a guy! He’s so Dreamy!

The Vegepygmies keep on coming, it also quickly becomes obvious that a Vegepygmy Chief is directing activities far to the north- ushering more of his spawn into the fight, it seems all of the Kobolds were host to one of the plant creatures, and now they have all emerged at once and heard the call.

The Union are all badly beaten (even before the fight started some of them), they’re also very nearly entirely out of spells (save Cantrips of course), and other powers. What follows therefore is ten rounds of hard slog, as more and more Vegepymies come rushing, the guys have taken down 24 of the creatures by the time the session comes to an end.

The highlights of the action include.

a) Grimm having to retreat to use the last of his Lay on Hands power, the Paladin is almost down- that may not sound like much but it doesn’t happen often, usually the walking first aid kit Zyler is on hand to save the day.

b) Zoki (who plays Grimm) spilling hot tea down himself and having to miss a turn- just when the guys really need him, three guys screaming repeatedly into Google-hangouts is amusing for a while.

c) The brief appearance of this guy at the far end of the passage to the north-

Fungus Gargoyle.

Zyler spots the thing and screams to his companions- a Gargoyle swathed in fungus, just like in the story that Kal’Zerth told them- the same type of creature that infected the Drow’s home.

Zyler sums up the Union’s to-do list, “We must kill the plant men, then the other Tendriculos, and then chase down and kill the Gargoyle.”

This news doesn’t go down so well- all of the guys are bloodied, or worse (actually Zyler is the most wounded, he’s on something like 10 hit points; Grimm has a few more).

Grimm screams back- “We can’t. We can’t go on. We must find some healing.”

I wont lie, it brought a tear to my eye. I may even get a chance to kill one of the buggers!

d) Grimm, and Lord T working in combination to secure the doors to the south (no lock, Grimm wedges his maul between the handles). Zalt all the while is counting down the rounds until his Banishment spell wears off- at which point the guys are going to have the Vegepygmies before them and the Tendriculos behind them.

e) Then this guy turns up-

A fungus man the size of an Ogre, with fists that hit as hard. The attack of the Fungoid- shambling down the northern passage to meet the guys, also signals the end of the Vegepygmies (at least for now), no reinforcements turn up to replace their fallen brethren. The Union are, at bloody last, starting to make headway.

That however is the end of the session, we took a while to get going- we didn’t start playing until at least 8.30, however we went through until 11.30; that was 30 minutes of chatter followed by 2.5 hours of desperate combat.

The guys are lucky to all still be alive, but for how long- the DMs last act is to let the guys know that the Banished Tendriculos is back, Lord T can hear it raging in the chamber to the south.

Next time boys, next time…
